**Course snapshot**

Nursing is much more than a job. It's a challenging but extremely rewarding vocation that makes a real difference to people's lives, and registered nurses with the right skills, knowledge and experience for modern day practice are in high demand. UCB's exciting and innovative Nursing (Adult) degree course will enable you to deliver and lead on safe, effective and compassionate care for adults with a range of acute and long-term conditions. We have outstanding training facilities complete with a replica hospital ward on campus, and our industry links will allow you to gain vital experience through work placements during your course.

**Who’s the course for?**

Our course is suitable for anyone interested in becoming a nurse in a hospital or GP practice, residential homes and hospices, schools or other community settings. Once qualified and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) you can practise in the UK and many countries overseas.

**Why should I study the course?**

- UCB has excellent facilities for nurse training, including our purpose-built Health Hub which replicates care settings you are likely to encounter in real life.

- You'll put theory into practice through work placements in a diverse range of healthcare environments, including GP surgeries, care homes, community care, specialist acute trusts and private healthcare providers.

- Clinical skills are taught by skills educators and clinical experts from practice

- Our course will train you to today's gold standard of nursing in line with 'Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses', while UCB is working towards NMC accreditation so you'll be able to apply for Registered Nurse Status on completion

Based in our new Moss House campus, UCB's purpose-built Health Hub is a specialist learning environment that closely replicates real-life primary and secondary care settings. The Health Hub includes a six-bed hospital ward with simulation manikins and other equipment, a community care environment, a clinical skills teaching room and other teaching and study areas.

During your course, you'll be placed in several different care environments, ranging from one week to 8-10 week placements. An integral part of the course is to participate in care delivered over 24 hours a day, seven days per week, so you'll be expected to adopt the various shift patterns governed by your placement area. Some placements may also be some distance from your home to enable you to experience different health and social care settings. Placement allocation will be discussed during your interview day.

This course will require you to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before you start. However, UCB will co-ordinate and fund the completion of your DBS check prior to enrolment.

**What skills will I gain?**

You will be able to demonstrate fitness to practise and accountability, acting in a professional manner, while adhering to NHS core values inside and outside the hospital environment.

You will gain an understanding of human development, key body systems, pharmacology and safe practice in managing medicines, as well as coordinating care for complex health needs.

You will learn how to practise, lead and manage as a registered nurse in a multidisciplinary team, using leadership skills for effective decision-making while being responsible and adaptable.

**What about the future?**

This degree provides an excellent platform for a nursing career in a variety of settings. You can apply for registered nurse roles in hospitals, GP practices, in the community, health centres, residential homes and hospices or in specialist units and schools, as well as working in patients' homes. With further experience, you could also work as a nurse trainer.

Assessment methods

**Teaching**

Teaching is carried out by appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers including registered nurses with up-to-date clinical experience.

Students are supervised in placements by Practice Supervisors, who will be registered health and social care professionals, and assessed by Practice Assessors who will be registered nurses.

A range of strategies will be used to facilitate learning for students including:

- Practical skills sessions in the Health Hub
- Placement learning opportunities
- E-learning - Canvas is UCB’s e-learning platform, providing 24-hour access to learning and support material
- Small group teaching and discussion groups
- Seminars and lectures
- Self-directed study
- Action learning sets and peer mentoring schemes

There is a strong focus on the vocational nature of this course. Students are assessed 50% in practice and simulation (minimum of 2,300 hours) through the completion of a Practice Assessment Document and OSCEs (Observed Structured Clinical Examinations).

The 50% theory (minimum of 2,300 hours) is assessed using a variety of modes of assessment, including written assignments, presentations, examinations, professional discussions and a portfolio of evidence.

The course consists of three parts and you will be expected to demonstrate achievement of set competencies and outcomes at the end of each part to enable progression to the next part or to complete the course.

Our teaching and assessment is underpinned by UCB’s Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy 2015-2020.
