The Psychology and Early Childhood Studies degree offers a fascinating and stimulating course of academic study which investigates the mind and children in social context.

In psychology here you will explore and examine the interaction between mind and behaviour, the nature of the unconscious, the functioning of memory, individual behaviour in social situations, prejudice and altruism. Psychology with us equips students with a thorough grounding in each of the major fields: social psychology, developmental psychology, biological psychology, and cognitive psychology. The focus of the teaching and learning of psychology here is on allowing students to explore fundamental questions about human behaviour, while learning about the importance of research, evidence collection and adherence to ethical codes.

Early Childhood Studies takes a multi-disciplinary approach and offers a fascinating and stimulating course of academic study. This means it includes educational, health, welfare, psychological, sociological, legal, philosophical, political and economic perspectives. The primary focus is children from birth to eight years but it also covers conception through to when a child is approximately eleven years of age (the natural completion of the primary education stage).

Graduates have begun careers in probation, arrest support, legal aid counselling, social work, careers advice, refugee council, behavioural support, assistant psychologist, health promotion, bank management, retail management, and prison service. Employment in an early years setting (management, supervisory or support positions), development or Family Support Work in the private, voluntary and statutory sector. Many graduates opt to pursue further academic qualifications such as MA or MSc degrees. Teaching – Primary PGCE or SCITT programmes.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
