**Summary**: Accounting and finance are key functions that lie at the heart of business organisations. This exciting, fast-moving discipline attracts the brightest and best students, both nationally and internationally, and is full of opportunity. If you have an analytical mind and a methodical approach to work, a career in accounting and finance will serve you well.

**Course details**: You develop practical skills that are highly valued by employers - such as analytical thinking, problem solving, teamworking and communication. With a focus on real-world business, the course helps you understand the broader context in which accounting is practised. It provides maximum exemptions from the professional examinations of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Association of International Accountants (AIA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Between Year 2 and your final year, you have the opportunity to spend a year in industry on placement, or study abroad at one of our partner institutions. Alternatively you could proceed on to the final year. We are typically unable to accept direct entry into years 2 and 3 of this course due to the specific conditions of the exemption agreements with professional accounting bodies.

**After the course**: The course is aimed primarily at students wishing to enter a finance-related career and many graduates have obtained trainee accountant positions in a variety of organisations locally, nationally and internationally. Holding an accounting qualification also provides a basis for entry into general management with excellent prospects to develop into strategic roles. We provide an environment that allows you to develop the ‘extra’ practical employability characteristics that will make you more interesting to employers in the job market in the years to come. Our award-winning careers service works with regional and national employers to advertise graduate positions, in addition to providing post-graduation support for all Teesside University alumni.

Assessment methods

Teaching includes lectures, seminars and computer workshops. You are taught by a dedicated team of staff who have a wide range of expertise across the field. They develop and maintain strong links with professional accounting bodies, such as CIMA and ACCA, and employers. Assessment methods are varied and include formal examinations, in-course work and presentations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

You don't have to be an accountant if you take this degree, but over half of graduates take a look at the rewards on offer for accountancy trainees and go into the job. Many others go into other parts of the finance industry as advisors or book-keepers, and some go into management or marketing. London is very popular for accountancy graduates going into their first job, but it's also quite common to work in Scotland, with Glasgow a perennial hotbed of Scottish accountancy recruitment. If you want to find a job in finance as an accountancy graduates, recruitment agencies were particularly important last year, so try to get in touch with one as soon as you can to improve your chances.
