Course description

You learn about file formats, software drivers, networking, routing, communication protocols and security, cryptology, reverse software engineering and investigative techniques. You use computer forensic tools such as password crackers and email converters. You learn the techniques and processes that allow you to recover, trace and capture digital data, and you are trained to prepare and present data as evidence in court.

Modules

Year 1: Computer technologies; crime scene examination; data and physical analysis; digital electronics and microprocessors; introduction to photography; legal foundations for investigative sciences; professional skills. Year 2: Database driven information systems; digital forensics practical investigations; evidence; offences and court procedures; media and storage; network investigation principles; science research proposal; scripting and problem solving. Year 3: Criminal investigations; cryptography and steganography; employment skills; internet and server investigations; science research project; scripting and searching.

The statistics here primarily reflect the prospects for forensic science graduates, as the largest group of students to study a forensic and archaeological science. While there are not a lot of jobs available in forensics itself just at the moment, reflected in the overall unemployment rates for forensic science graduates, there are still jobs for graduates from these subjects. Last year's graduates went into analysis work in labs, technician roles and general research, and for those looking a little wider, IT and management also employed forensics graduates. This is also a good subject for those wanting to work for the police, and if you do, it’s sometimes possible to get sponsorship, so that can be an option to fund your studies and get some relevant – and challenging - experience.

Information systems courses cover a range of areas, including information design, modelling and the finance industry. How well graduates did made a particular difference in 2012 – computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good – particularly in London, and that’s where over a quarter of graduates started work last year. Be realistic with these degrees – opportunities are not spread throughout the country and you might struggle, for example, to get an information systems job outside the larger cities.
