2017/18 Funding Update The Welsh Government announced in December 2016 that UK students who are studying in Wales and commit to working here for 2 years following the completion of their degree will still be entitled to the current funding structure (September 2017 and March 2018 cohorts). Students who currently live in Wales and students not currently living in Wales who do not wish to commit to working in Wales for 2 years following completion of their degree will still be able to study in Wales but will need to secure funding from an alternative sources, this may include funding from the relevant funding body in their home country or self-finance. Information regarding funding for subsequent intakes has not yet been released by the Welsh Government. EMPLOYABILITY: 99% of Nursing graduates are employed in a professional or managerial job 6 months after graduating (Unistats 2016) AVERAGE EARNINGS: Nursing graduates can expect a starting salary of about £21,000 rising to £34,000 for a highly-experienced staff nurse. ACCREDITATION: Graduates will be eligible to apply for Registered Nurse (Adult) status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Winner of the Student Nursing Times Award 2014 – Pre-registration Nurse Education Provider of the Year Child Nursing students require the desire to work closely with children, young people and their families with both acute and chronic illnesses. Children’s nurses work as part of a multidisciplinary team and work closely with specialist nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, play specialists, social workers and others to provide and coordinate the health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families. Individuals who pursue this career should be able to communicate well with both children and their families, work as part of a team and demonstrate a non-judgemental and caring approach towards families from a wide range of backgrounds. Students will learn how to: • Focus on the child, or young person, as a dynamic developing individual while supporting parents to care collaboratively for the child • Develop strong working partnerships with colleagues in multidisciplinary teams to provide and coordinate the health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families • Develop practical skills and manage time effectively Children’s ward placements will include placements in the two district general hospitals in Swansea or in the West Wales hospitals. These will include general medical and surgical wards as well as other specialist areas including orthopaedics, burns and plastics, neurology and care of the neonate. 19,890 nursing qualifications were awarded in 2015, making it much the most popular degree in the country. Despite that, we have a serious shortage of nurses - estimates suggest that we're over 20,000 nurses short - that is only set to continue. So it's no surprise to see that the very large majority of nursing graduates go on to become nurses, and that starting salaries are pretty competitive. There are lots of different specialties to choose from (including midwifery), and the most common by far is adult nursing, but the typical end result for graduates is the same — they go on to become nurses (or midwives). That’s not to say that you can’t do anything else. Some nursing graduates get other jobs - usually, but not always, in health or caring professions, or management, and with nurses in such demand, there are always going to be options for you. Do be aware that even this doesn't necessarily guarantee you can get the exact nursing job you want exactly where you want though - some flexibility in type of job and location will still help your career.
