Marine biology is a fascinating subject involving the study of life in the sea, and this course will help you to develop knowledge and skills to open up a range of exciting career opportunities.As a student on the BSc Marine Biology, you will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and discussion groups, supported by practical classes and field courses. Our coastal location gives easy access to a wide range of study habitats including exposed rocky shores, steep cliffs enclosing sandy sheltered bays, salt marshes and estuarine mudflats, and you will undertake boat work on our custom-designed 18m catamaran-class survey vessel equipped with state-of-the-art survey and research equipment.On campus, you will study in our new laboratories within a state-of-the-art 4.2m science lab facility, which also includes the unique 1.3m Visualisation Centre, which displays and manipulates multi-dimensional information from animal tag monitoring. We are 16th in the UK for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide 2018) and the subject gives you a wide range of specialist and generic transferable skills that can lead to career opportunities around the world in fields such as marine research, environmental management, conservation, and teaching.You will study in a research-intensive environment - 7th in the UK for Research Excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014) and you will learn from academics at the cutting-edge of their fields. Our renowned team includes Professor Rory Wilson, Rolex Laureate and Chief Scientific Consultant behind National Geographics Great Migrations, who invented the Daily Diary tag to monitor animal movement and behaviour; and our experts also advised on the Blue Planet II TV series. We are also pioneers in seagrass conservation and staff, students and alumni founded the Project Seagrass charity.Teaching excels in such a dynamic environment, and we are 17th in the UK for teaching quality (Times & Sunday Times University Guide 2018). Swansea University is also ranked Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, the highest rank for teaching in universities. The BSc Marine Biology course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, and covers themes including animal and marine welfare and conservation, the biological control of invertebrate pests, microbiology, and ocean and climate. The course will give you the opportunity to explore a diverse and stimulating range of modules such as marine plankton and oceanography, marine ecosystems and marine and terrestrial ecology.At the end of Year 2, you will attend a residential field course, and in the final year, you will carry out an individual research project, based either in Swansea or on an overseas placement. In the last few years these have included locations such as Bermuda, Mexico, Indonesia, the USA and Australia. This degree is also offered as a four-year course, with a year in industry (C424) or with a year abroad (C107).One of the most rewarding experiences for me was the SCUBA diving club. Before coming to Swansea University I had never dived, and now I am a fully qualified Open Water Instructor, teaching new budding marine biologists to learn to dive! There are so many amazing dive sites very close to Swansea! Being part of the club makes you feel part of a community and having a friendly and helpful group of individuals around you can really help to support you through your studies. I am very proud to say that, in the few years that I have been in the club, the membership has grown from less than 20 individuals to over 100! Modules

Year 1: 8 compulsory modules. Year 2: 8 compulsory modules. Year 3: 4 compulsory modules, including a research project, plus 4 or 5 options from a list of 8. A total of 120 credits of modules must be pursued each year.
