Human geography

The Geography with a Year in Industry scheme is aimed at students who are particularly driven to enhance their employability through a period of work experience as part of a 4 year programme of study. You will follow our set BA programme in Year 1, with a mixed curriculum of human and physical geography but the ability to emphasise one aspect or the other through your optional modules. In Year 2 you will pick a Human or a Physical core, but can maintain a mixture or specialise entirely in one side or another, though your choice of optional modules. Year in Industry students also undertake employability-related programmes in years 1 and 2, and are also required to maintain a specified level of overall attainment (currently 60% and 65% in years 1 and 2 respectively) in order to progress. Whilst the onus is on the applicant to find a placement for the third year, we have dedicated staff available to help, and we also aim to provide some paid placements on a competitive basis. Year 3 is spent on a placement and Year 4 is back in Swansea. Your degree is calculated on your work in your second and fourth years of study.

Assessment methods

On the BA Geography course you will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical classes and field classes. You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including examinations, coursework, practical work, fieldwork and continuous assessment from tutorials. You will also complete a dissertation in Year Three.
