The BSc Business Management (Human Resource Management) with a Foundation Year is a programme designed for the student who wants to excel and reach the top level of global business management practice, but does not yet have the required qualifications.
The four year course provides students with a broad range of expertise across the areas of business and management (such as marketing, operations, finance, accounting, strategy and human resource management) as well as offering a range of cutting-edge specialist optional modules. The BSc Business Management (Human Resource Management) with a Foundation Year, is designed for students who are interested in the human element of business management - from classical human resource management to areas such as leadership and high-performance organisation.

The foundation year is taught at The College, on Bay Campus. Located next to the School of Management, The College is the University’s pathway provider and offers a unique learning environment; designed to fully prepare you for the final three years of your degree. Small lecture and seminar classes, state-of-the-art facilities and world-class teaching help you to realise your full academic potential.

The Foundation Year (Year 0) gives you the opportunity to build your knowledge in business and offers a high level of support through small lecture and seminar classes. Year 1 will include compulsory modules which will give you a grounding in core business principles including: marketing, accounting, operations and finance. In addition, we provide a range of modules that cover the basics for all areas of business, including maths and statistics as well as professional skills. Years 2 and 3 will include a combination of advanced compulsory content, optional module choices and the Final Year Project.

Assessment methods

For details on each module’s assessment criteria, please consult the Module Catalogue within the School's web pages at http://www.swansea.ac.uk/som/. Typically, each module includes a written examination after the taught elements have been completed (so a 15 credit module taken in the first semester will be examined in December, a 15 credit module taken in the second semester will be examined in April) and coursework or continuous assessment consisting of a number of assignments. Assignments may be individual assignments, group assignments, presentations or business reports, for example. Students thus have every opportunity to develop key-skills in the use of Information Technology to gather, coordinate and present information, and also their confidence in presentation. Typically continuous assessment might count for approximately 30% of the total mark, with examinations weighted at 70% but the proportion can vary considerably between modules.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This subject is much more common at postgraduate level, and so be aware that many of the good jobs in HR and personnel management go to graduates with Masters or other postgraduate qualifications in this subject.
