About this course
Studying the Ancient History and History degree enables you to explore distant civilisations which remain influential today, alongside more contemporary historical disciplines addressing subjects such as history and memory of war and conflict, public history and heritage, and modern British social history. This three-year degree helps to provide graduates with a wealth of inspiring career opportunities thanks to numerous transferable skills which are highly valued by employers. Ancient History at Swansea is ranked 2nd in the UK for Course Satisfaction (Guardian University Guide 2023), and History at Swansea is ranked top 20 for Teaching (NSS 2022). With a wide choice of modules to choose from including; gender and women’s history, Greek and Roman history and society, modern British social history, health and medicine, you will have plenty of scope to learn, discover and refine your interests. You can also learn Greek or Latin. Enhance your practical skills and experiences by taking part in the ‘Literacy through Latin’ work placement project, teaching Latin in local schools. The third year of this degree will provide valuable cultural and academic experiences with a Year Abroad. Teaching on this course is informed by a vibrant and supportive research environment that unites academics, postgraduates and visiting scholars around shared subject matter. Our students can also get actively involved in a wide-range of clubs and societies including the History Society, one of Swansea University’s largest academic societies. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have beaches, parkland and a vibrant city all close by. Modules
Your first year will include a mixture of compulsory and optional modules, with examples of compulsory modules from recent years including:
• Greek History and Society
• Rome from Village to Empire: An Introduction to Roamn History
• Making History In your second year you will study a mixture of compulsory and optional modules, with your third year comprising entirely optional modules from a wide range of subject areas. Examples of optional modules in recent years have included:
• Beginning Greek Language
• Gender in the Roman World
• The Imperials Image: Roman Emperors and Empresses in History, Literature and Art
• Roman Love Poetry
• Revolutionary America, 1760 - 1791
Your final year will include an optional independent dissertation project.

Top job areas of graduates
History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.
