Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University is ranked 6th for Graduate Prospects in the UK by The Complete University Guide 2018. We have worked with aerospace companies around the world such as BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EADS, and Airbus. This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED). From the inferno at the heart of a gas turbine to the computer nerve centre of the cockpit, aeronautical and aerospace vehicles demand cutting-edge engineering. Aerospace engineering degrees give students a unique insight into the technology needed to travel in, make use of and explore the atmosphere and the universe. You will receive training in the design, analysis, testing and flight of aeronautical vehicles, including propeller-driven and jet-powered planes, helicopters and gliders. You will gain the ability to use analytical skills and tools to solve problems relevant to the application of engineering to the aerospace industry. The degree also provides a foundation for you to aim for the prized Chartered Engineer status and prepares you for postgraduate or doctoral study, or academic research. Comprehensive theoretical studies are complemented by group design exercises, industrial site visits and hands-on aerospace practicals. Our state-of-the art facilities include: - 1 Merlin flight simulator capsule MP521; 2 static MP500-2 flight simulators; a custom-built £1.2 million 18-metre wind tunnel; a fully instrumental JetCat P120 engine; and world-leading aerodynamic modelling software (used to design the BLOODHOUND SSC). You will get practical flying experience in our state-of-the-art flight simulator and flying lessons at our local airport. You will also cover a flight test course in aircraft performance, stability and control at a flight school in a Jetstream twin turboprop aircraft. Our Aerospace degrees are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Engineering Designers. 95% of our graduates are in employment or further study within 6 months of graduating (DHLE) – the average salary for our Aerospace Engineering graduates is £22,000. Just over a thousand UK graduates got a degree in aerospace engineering in 2015. There are a few dedicated employers, unevenly spread around the country, and so there's often competition for graduates looking for their first job - which leads to a relatively high (although improving) early unemployment rate, and a good grade is particularly important for graduates. Sponsorship and work experience can be key if you're after the most sought-after roles in the industry. Starting salaries are usually good and graduates commonly go into the aerospace (yes, this does include manufacture of equipment for satellites and space operations) and defence industries. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
