Sport and exercise sciences

Sports performance is driven by appropriate sports nutrition advice and good quality research. Sport and exercise is currently high on the UK government’s health agenda and there is currently a high demand for those who have studied and specialised in the field of sports and exercise nutrition.

Employers require nutritionists to have the specialised skills and appropriate training needed to work with all who undertake physical and sporting activities. Many will look to employ those who have been recognised by professional bodies and are on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

Modules

First year modules include Health Skills, Introduction to Nutrition One, Introduction to Nutrition Two, Introduction to Research, Physiology of Exercise and Sport Performance

Assessment methods

A wide range of assessments are used to help develop key skills for both academic and employment purposes.

Assessment methods include essays, poster presentations, web-based assessments, oral presentations, and both practical and written exams.

This is the subject you need to study if you want to become a dietician — an important job in the country’s healthcare sector, and the single most common job for nutrition graduates. We don’t have many graduates in nutrition every year and with the population becoming more aware of health and well-being and with many medical needs being addressed by the application of specific diets, this is likely to be an area of increasing demand in the future.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

One of the fastest growing subjects in the country, the number of sports science graduates went from under 3,000 in 2003 to over 10,000 in 2013. Numbers have fallen slightly since 2015, but we still have over 9,000 graduates in the subject. However, the good news is the country's appetite for good health and fitness - and the adaptability of graduates in the subject - means that sports science grads are less likely than average to be out of work. Sports science graduates, not surprisingly, tend to get jobs in sport, fitness and health - coaching and teaching especially - but they're found all over the economy. Management and business are also popular options for graduates from this subject — and sports science graduates are particularly found where drive, determination and physical fitness are an advantage.
