Course description

The hands-on software engineering programme supports students as they develop a valuable combination of software engineering competency and general business and employability skills. Graduates will be proficient in a range of technologies including Java, Android, Oracle SQL, PHP, Web APIâ??s, JSON, HTML5, jQuery and big data analytics. Students learn from an academic team with extensive experience in business computing, computer systems, business analytics, databases, web development and software engineering. The course team also maintain a strong professional network - which helps them to offer students support as they look for work experience placements and graduate employment.

Year 1: organisation and management; programming principles and models; programming as problem solving; internet fundamentals; microprocessor principles; mathematics for computing; data structures and algorithms; network fundamentals; user interface design. A specialist subject, and not surprisingly graduates tend to go into software engineering roles. The degree classification students achieved made a particular difference in 2012 – computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good – particularly in London. At the moment, recruitment agencies are the most common route for graduates from this degree to get their first job - meaning it's worth getting in touch with a few specialist agencies in advance of graduation to get a foot in the door.

English is one of the most popular degree subjects and in 2012, more than 12,000 students graduated with English degrees. As good communication is so important to modern business, you can find English graduates in all parts of the economy, although obviously, you can't expect to get a job as a doctor or nuclear physicist. There isn't a lot of difference in terms of outcomes between taking English language or English literature, so choose the one that suits you and don't worry about whether one is more likely to get you the job you want than the other. About one in five English graduates went into further study last year, and apart from further degrees in English, graduates were also likely to go onto teaching, law or publishing. All in all it's a flexible option – some even changed career direction entirely and took postgraduate courses in subjects like nursing or maths.
