The rapid growth of the gaming industry, the increasing accessibility of VR and continued demand for spatial audio in media products has made effective sound design more essential than ever to the success of a production. Whether you want to pursue a career in film, television or gaming, this three-year degree programme will help you to develop the creative skills and technical know-how required to succeed as an audio specialist.

As a sound design student, your hands-on training will see you making use of Solent’s wide range of specialist audio production facilities. These include one of the only private Dolby Atmos™ cinemas in Europe, fully equipped ProTools HD recording studios, professional audio laboratories and a hemi-anechoic chamber equipped with a range of National Instruments data acquisition/analysis systems.

Solent’s sound for film, TV and games curriculum is designed to help you specialise your knowledge towards specific career pathways, preparing you for work in either creative or technical roles. As well as choosing from a range of optional units, you will also have the opportunity to undertake a major independent research project. This research project will allow you to take an in-depth look at an area of the industry that interests you - acting as a springboard into either your first graduate role or further high-level study.

Another important element of the course is collaborative project work. During your studies you will take part in shared units, live briefs and client projects alongside students from other media disciplines. This will introduce you to industry methods of working and help you to build a portfolio/showreel of fully-realised creative projects. Past projects have included mobile games, documentaries, dramas and on-location live broadcasts.

Assessment methods

This course is assessed using a blend of practical exams and coursework. The course will end with a final major project in which you will draw on the skills covered throughout the course to support a piece of applied research.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The stats cover quite a broad subject area, but over half of the graduates we're talking about here studied some kind of audio technology subject. It's not a surprise, then, to find that the most common job for graduates from this subject last year was as a sound technician in film, TV and music. Jobs in IT, as arts officers or musicians, in marketing, or in business were also popular — these degrees can be quite flexible and give you a lot of opportunities. Another degree that falls under this heading is in transport logistics (told you it was broad!), and those graduates did particularly well as our whole just-in-time retail economy really needs good logistics skills - and graduates with those qualifications are in serious shortage.
