Got a passion for music production? Hoping to pursue a music degree here at Southampton Solent University? This year-long popular music production foundation programme is structured to equip you with the broad range of production skills you’ll need to progress onto a full degree.

Students will spend the year building production skills and industry awareness, working alongside our experienced course team on a range of different equipment. Available facilities include:

five recording studios and four mix workstations, all equipped with Pro|Tools HD and NI Komplete,

three ICON DCommand worksurfaces,

an analog studio with Audient ASP8024,

outboards by Neve, Lexicon and Universal Audio,

microphones by Neumann, AKG, Coles, Rode,

plug-ins by Waves, McDSP, Sonnox,

Yamaha M7 and LS9 digital live mixers,

and a Music Technology Lab with 25 Apple Macs, Pro Tools, Logic and Sibelius.

Students are encouraged to pursue industry work experience throughout the course, and Southampton Solent University is ideally located for students to take advantage of the city’s thriving music scene.

In the second semester, students will have the opportunity to tailor the course to their own career ambitions, undertaking an assessed live sound production, studio recording project or music production project.

Successful completion of the Popular Music Production foundation year will provide a pathway to the Popular Music Production degree.

Suitable for both schooled and self-taught producers of all skill levels, Southampton Solent University’s popular music production programme combines technical learning with an in-depth study of the history, context and theory behind contemporary music production.

Students will build the required skills by working alongside our experienced course team on a range of different equipment including:

Past students have benefitted from the course team’s excellent links to industry by attending guest lectures from visiting industry professionals. Speakers have included Mike Moran, composer; Trevor Horn, Grammy award-winning producer; Rob Da Bank, DJ and festival organiser; Gary Langhan, sound engineer; and Mark Lawrence CEO of The Association for Electronic Music.

Students will also be able to tailor the course to their own interests through optional projects and units in the second and third years. These units can help to inform your career and ensure that your technical skills are underpinned by a solid understanding of the wider music industry.

Graduates from this course have gone on to secure roles at record labels, post-production studios, and film and television companies.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Music is a popular degree subject and a little over 4,600 degrees were awarded to UK graduates in 2015. Most were working after six months — but postgraduate study (usually continuing with music) is quite common and a lot of graduates go into music teaching, often as freelance or travelling music teachers of particular instruments. Obviously, many music graduates get work as musicians as well, or work as sound recordists and in similar technical roles. Music is important in advertising and so a lot of graduates go into this industry, and management is also a popular job role for music graduates. There's also a niche for music graduates wanting to work in IT and computing, particularly with web applications. Because a lot of musician work is temporary or freelance, the most common way for new graduates to get jobs as musicians is through their own contacts, so learning how to make good use of networks and contacts might help in your career.
