A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP or BTEC Diploma at MP or equivalent. We will consider mature students who have not recently undertaken a formal course of study at A-level, or equivalent, but can demonstrate relevant work or voluntary experience, that's indicative of their ability to complete the course successfully. We will also consider overseas applicants in an equivalent situation to UK students as outlined above, and who have been taught in English or have IELTS 5.5, or equivalent. We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Hoping to pursue a degree in advertising, journalism, marketing or PR? Do you not yet have the necessary qualifications to study at degree level? This innovative foundation year will support you to learn new skills, gain academic confidence and develop your creativity in advance of a full honours degree at Southampton Solent University. During the foundation programme, students are encouraged to explore a range of different creative disciplines before specialising in one specific area.

This practical programme begins with the opportunity to work on a media-based project as part of a small team. This project helps students to see how different content elements come together to make a final outcome. By working in teams, students also develop interpersonal and project management skills.

The course is delivered in a supportive environment, learning a range of academic and study management skills. These skills include independent learning, time management, academic research and critical thinking. Students are also introduced to the business of the creative industries and get a taste of the employment opportunities that are available.

Learning is hands-on with an emphasis on employability skills and real situations that students might experience in the workplace. Students will also develop new practical skills to support their chosen degree. These skills include photography, film, editing, audio production, website development, digital design, media and broadcasting.

Study skills seminars and tutorials teach students advanced research techniques, how to write creative and compelling text, and how to think critically. Workshops introduce students to media production, photography, script writing, communications, IT skills, investigative journalism and creative writing. During the last part of the year students will work on a final project which is directly related to the honours degree they have chosen.

This foundation year is ideally suited to those who would like to pursue a full honours degree in a related subject but do not currently meet the entry requirements.

Students who have been out of education for a while may also benefit from the gentler introduction that this foundation year can provide.

Assessment methods

The assessment for this course will largely be portfolio based – asking you to present evidence of your engagement in the units. This will be supported as appropriate with self-reflection. You will also learn to write reports using formal English as appropriate. There will also be a presentation assessment for the Futurology unit.
