The maritime industry is one of global significance, generating billions of dollars of revenue annually and offering an ever-growing number of opportunities for professional careers. In order to sustain itself, the industry needs graduates who have developed knowledge, understanding and skills across a number of specialist subject areas.Studying at Southampton Solent University will help you to capitalise on these opportunities and attain the combination of business acumen and maritime expertise that employers in the industry are looking for. The key aim of the maritime and business degree is to build students knowledge, understanding and employability skills to prepare them for their future careers.Solents annual maritime conference is one of the highlights of the academic calendar and allows students to network with industry experts and make valuable contacts. It also offers the opportunity to listen to a wide range of industry leaders speaking about current maritime issues, keeping students up-to-date with what is happening in the industry right now. As well as providing for an ever growing social calendar (including an annual dinner and an end of year boat party), the Maritime Society is in regular contact with our international alumni, who help arrange guest speakers and get involved with volunteering opportunities.Recently, Southampton Solent University launched the China Centre (Maritime) with the key aim of growing a number of strong links with industry and with maritime universities in China, allowing the University to be at the forefront of international research and global trade developments.As a direct benefit of our accreditation from the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), students will receive exemptions from the academic requirements for membership at either chartered member or membership level of CILT. In the same way, students will be entitled to exemptions from two of the ICS exams (Professional Qualifying Examinations) required to gain ICS membership (an internationally recognised mark of professionalism in the shipping industry).

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The stats cover quite a broad subject area, but over half of the graduates we're talking about here studied some kind of audio technology subject. It's not a surprise, then, to find that the most common job for graduates from this subject last year was as a sound technician in film, TV and music. Jobs in IT, as arts officers or musicians, in marketing, or in business were also popular — these degrees can be quite flexible and give you a lot of opportunities. Another degree that falls under this heading is in transport logistics (told you it was broad!), and those graduates did particularly well as our whole just-in-time retail economy really needs good logistics skills - and graduates with those qualifications are in serious shortage.
