Photography

Bring your unique style and photographic vision to the world of editorial fashion with Solent’s fashion photography degree. You’ll learn technical photography skills and develop your knowledge using our industry-standard photography, make-up and styling studios. You'll also gain an in-depth knowledge of fashion industry practices and the day-to-day operation of fashion businesses.

On this creative degree. students will develop their practical photography skills while studying fashion and photography theory. Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through our in-house creative agency, Solent Creatives, and have also previously been involved with the University-organised Southampton Fashion Week.

Students will learn a diverse range of skills with access to professional photography facilities and a make-up studio. They are also able to hone their IT, editorial layout and design skills in our Mac suites using industry standard software like InDesign, Final Cut Pro and Photoshop. Students also have access to digital reprographics rooms for high quality professional prints.

The University’s strong ties with industry offer students many opportunities to apply for work experience. Recent students have enjoyed work placements at companies including Top Man, Fat Face, All Walks Beyond the Catwalk and Good Fibres.

The course places a strong emphasis on equipping students with the skills and knowledge required by employers. Reflecting this, previous graduates have gone on to work at renowned fashion companies like Karen Millen, Marks and Spencer, Coast and the London School of Modelling in roles such as creative media photographer, fashion stylist, visual stylist, production coordinator, model scout and booker.

Want to work in a growing, creative sector where we are a world leader? Welcome to design! The UK has a proud reputation as a centre of design excellence, and last year just over 14,000 design degrees were awarded. At the moment, the jobs market looks a little better for fashion and textile designers, and not as good for multimedia or interactive designers — but that may change by the time you graduate. In general, design graduates are more likely than most to start their career in London, although that also varies by subject — last year fashion designers often found jobs in the North West, graphic designers in the South West, illustrators in the South West, East Anglia and Midlands, textile designers in the Midlands and the North West, and visual designers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

A few years ago graduates from this subject were having a very hard time but things have improved a lot thanks to our active media, film and photographic industries - much the most common employers for this group. The most common jobs are in the arts — as photographers, audio-visual technicians, operators and designers, as directors, as artists and as graphic designers. Training in presenting sound and graphics is useful in other industries as well, so you can find graduates in journalism, in advertising, in business management, in events management and in web design and IT. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common in the arts, as are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once.
