Would you like to improve your English language and academic skills before progressing onto a full undergraduate degree programme? This course aims to fully prepare those who speak English as a second language for full-time study on one of Southampton Solent University’s specialist degree programmes.

Part of a range of extended degree programmes for students whose first language is not English, this foundation year helps learners to reach a standard broadly equivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall (with a minimum of IELTS 5.5 in each language skill component) before starting undergraduate studies.

Using our multimedia facilities and language centre, students will have the chance to tailor their English language studies to suit the subject they will later study at degree level.

Solent University is proud to offer students a supportive learning environment. Face to face academic support is complemented by 24/7 access to our virtual learning environment. Students also benefit from access to our dedicated language centre, which offers a range of interactive resources designed to aid second language study.

This foundation year will help you transition into academic life as smoothly as possible, improving your language, research and communication skills as you begin to learn about your chosen subject area. Successful completion of the International Foundation year will provide a pathway to the BSc (Hons) Information Technology degree.

Students studying information technology management here at Solent will have the opportunity to use the latest software and hardware in our dedicated computing and networking labs. These include our usability labs, which use eye-tracking technology to test the functionality of digital platforms and the quality of the user experience.

Southampton Solent University also operates a devices lab - an area which contains a range of mobile devices for website and application testing.

Successful students will have the opportunity to gain an Oracle certification alongside their degree. This shows employers that they possess proven skills and opens up the door to further certification through the ‘Oracle University’ programme.

Business information technology at Southampton Solent University has a strong focus on employability. This means that the curriculum is designed to equip students with skills that are relevant to employers. Students are also encouraged to take part in placements in their third year of study, or during their summer breaks.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Information systems courses cover a range of areas, including information design, modelling and the finance industry. How well graduates did made a particular difference in 2015 — computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, and that’s where over a quarter of graduates started work last year. This is also a good degree to take if you want to follow a technical role in the finance or advertising industry.
