•Gain real work experience that is relevant to your future career.
•Develop your knowledge of the major programming languages (C/C++, Java, JavaScript, C#), database design and manipulation, and various modern frameworks.
•Learn to produce high-quality, large-scale, enterprise-wide and complex software applications.
•Have the opportunity to study abroad — Erasmus funding is available for European placements.

Develop and enhance your skills of computation, software and systems across a variety of application areas, including web-based, database and distributed applications, and hardware programming. You cover all areas of the software development process including system architecture and design, with a particular focus on software solutions.

**How you Learn**
This course is designed so you can develop skills in contemporary programming techniques, tools and processes and understand the project management practices used to support and control such projects. Through a combination of theoretical and practical activities, you will learn everything you need for a career in software engineering.

There are opportunities to study abroad at one of our partner universities with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus programme.
**Applied learning**
**Work placements**

You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career. Previous students have worked at organisations including Intel, IBM, 3Squared, SN Systems, CSC Servelec.

**Live projects**
In your second year, you will work in a small group on a real client based project. You will analyse their requirements, then design, implement and test a prototype which you will present to your client. This will allow you to experience the types of demands faced by commercial software engineers and increase your confidence while you are applying for your work placements.

**Networking opportunities**
Throughout the final year there are numerous opportunities for you to engage with career management, career fairs and workshops, employer presentations, visits, and professional advisors.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

A specialist subject, and not surprisingly graduates tend to go into software engineering roles or related. The degree classification students achieved made a particular difference last year — computing graduates with the best grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months and employers can even rate a good grade as important as work experience. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, where average starting salaries for good graduates were getting towards £38k last year. Be aware that at the moment, recruitment agencies are much the most common way for graduates from this degree to get their first job, so it may be worth getting in touch with a few specialist agencies in advance of graduation if you take this degree to get a foot in the door.
