Children's nursing

Study to become a children’s nurse in facilities described by the Nursing and Midwifery Council as ‘a beacon for the future development of health education in this country’.

This course offers you an exciting opportunity to become a fully qualified children's nurse. It recognises the unique role of the children's nurse in providing physical, emotional, and psychological care and advice to children and their families.

You will be taught by experienced registered nurses who will demonstrate how interpersonal skills, relationships, care and dignity act as the focus points of the course and how these skills are necessary to work compassionately in the modern, complex healthcare world.

Nurses are an integral part of a multidisciplinary team and you study partly alongside students from other health disciplines, such as social workers, radiographers and physiotherapists. This allows you to develop team-working skills and understand the contribution of different professionals to patient care.

We encourage you to develop independent learning skills so you can make the most of your academic and practical experience, which prepares you for personal and professional development beyond registration as a nurse. You also develop resilience and build employability skills, so you are ready for the wide range of career opportunities offered by the developing role of the nurse.

The Faculty of Health and Wellbeing delivers courses that enable graduates to register as professionals across a range of health and social care related subject areas.

**Facilities**

We provide modern facilities to help you develop clinical skills and specialist knowledge for your career.. Our clinical suites include simulated clinical environments and replicated community settings, in which you learn and work. This makes it easier for you to take what you've learnt at university out into the real world with confidence.

**Placements and work experience**

Practice-based learning is central to your development and you spend 50% of each year on placement within either a hospital, community or independent sector setting across the Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Barnsley region. You will undertake a range of exciting placements in stimulating environments, helping you build your skills, confidence, flexibility, adaptability and resilience, which are essential to a career as a registered nurse.

During your placements you will be provided with a mentor to help you develop your skills and competency. Your academic study supports your learning on placement and your placement experience allows you to develop your thinking about the application of evidence to practice. This will help you to develop both personally and professionally, and you will become a knowledgeable problem solver and critical thinker.

**Networking opportunities**
You will gain from a range of external speakers including specialist clinicians from practice.

**Professional recognition**

This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Graduates are eligible to apply to register with them. You must be registered with the NMC in order to practise as a nurse in the UK.

**Placements** Placement settings include Sheffield Children’s Hospital and children’s wards/departments within local district general hospitals. You also gain significant experience working within various community settings across South Yorkshire. We believe that this unique experience makes you stand out at interview and increases opportunities for employment.
