Access to HE Diploma from a relevant QAA-recognised Access to HE course which has mainly biology and chemistry related modules, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate. Normally we require 15 credits at level 2 and 45 at level 3 of which at least 15 level 3 credits should be graded at distinction level.

Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, this course provides you with a balanced, well-rounded education and hands-on practical training in biochemistry. You gain a deep understanding of the subject through industry placements and extensive lab work.

There are opportunities to study abroad at one of our partner universities with the possibility of funding through the Erasmus programme.

**How you learn**

You'll undertake comprehensive training in the latest biochemical and analytical methods, using industry-standard equipment within our world class teaching laboratories. You gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biochemistry from a theoretical perspective, and undertake relevant work placements and mini research projects.

**Applied learning**
**Work placement**s

You can apply your knowledge and skills in the workplace by applying for a work placement in year three. This is a great opportunity to gain experience and professional skills that can give you a significant advantage at the start of your career. If you are unable to commit to a year, it is also possible to work for a shorter amount of time during a summer placement. These shorter placements can still contribute to your degree.

By securing a placement with one of our industry partners, you ensure that you enter the jobs market with a CV that attracts employer attention. You can apply for placements in companies such as Reckitt Benckiser, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute or in research laboratories, universities and hospitals.

If you are doing your work placement in another European country there may be funding available through the Erasmus programme.

**Research projects**

Working alongside research active staff you will have the opportunity to combine the skills and knowledge that you have gained during your degree to undertake a final year research project. This is usually completed in our laboratories at the University. It may also be possible to undertake your project at your placement organisation.

On top of your industry placement, the course has excellent links to the industry and its alumni, allowing you ample opportunity for networking.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Around 2,500 graduates got degrees in this demanding but valuable subject last year. Graduates who want a career in research usually take postgraduate qualifications - over a third of graduates in the subject took this option - but those who want to start work when they graduate have a lot to choose from.
