Course description

Data is everywhere – generated and used in the home, by businesses and via social media. This course is designed to help meet the huge demand for graduates who can design, build, manage and operate the technology, applications and IT services that create, analyse control and use this data. The course provides you with knowledge and understanding of the methods, tools and techniques used in developing and operating IT systems and data processing. Employability As well as gaining a wide range of technical skills, the course focuses on improving your key employability skills, such as communication, literacy and numeracy, teamwork, problem-solving, time management and business awareness, which all employers are looking for. Having technical expertise is useful for gaining employment in the IT industry, but having strong employability skills in addition will provide you with an advantage in a competitive job market, and give you the confidence to pursue your desired career. The course is designed to produce graduates who can undertake roles in DevOps (the practice of collaboration, communicate and integration between software developers and system operators to facilitate rapid IT service delivery). As you progress through the course, you have the option to specialise as a "developer" or an "operator", by choosing modules that use industry-standard tools and frameworks, such as .NET for software development, ITIL for IT service management, and the SAP HANA Cloud Platform for data analytics. We have VMWare software to run virtualisation simulations – a key technology behind enterprise infrastructures and currently have agreements with organisations such as Microsoft and SAS to use their specialist software, giving you experience of using industry-based platforms to develop IT systems. Placements and work experience On this course there is scope for you to work on live projects for local businesses. For example, this may involve installing, configuring and operating a content management system to help run their website. These projects allow you to practise more than just your technical computing skills. By working with real companies you can apply the project management and entrepreneurship techniques you have learned, and test your interpersonal and time management skills. You then have the option to build on this experience with a paid placement year. We have strong links with industry, giving you a wide range of placement choices at both small and large businesses. We help you to secure a placement, by guiding you through the application process. You are supported during your placement by an academic member of staff, who visits you at your place of work. Previous students have worked at • Bosch • British Airways • Derbyshire County Council • MoneySupermarket • Nestle • Next • NHS • Pirelli Tyres • SAP. Typical placement roles include web and programming, database development, service support and network management. Facilities You use specialist facilities and equipment including Arduino computers, web and database servers, and virtual machines. We have a lending service for laptops, video and audio kit. You also have access to multimedia studios (PC and Macs) equipped to high specifications and we have specialist networking laboratories where you can interconnect PCs. We have a suite of computer labs that are open late into the evenings during the week and during the day at weekends. The whole University campus is covered by Wi-Fi meaning cloud-based services are available anywhere, including the social areas. We are also an EXIN accredited exam centre, and so offer you the opportunity to sit various Certification exams, in areas such as ITIL and PRINCE2. Professional recognition This course is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. It counts towards the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered IT Professional and / or partially meeting the requirements for Chartered Engineer.

Information systems courses cover a range of areas, including information design, modelling and the finance industry. How well graduates did made a particular difference in 2015 — computing graduates with good grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, and that’s where over a quarter of graduates started work last year. This is also a good degree to take if you want to follow a technical role in the finance or advertising industry. Many jobs for this degree were found in the larger cities last year and opportunities may be more limited outside those areas.
