Course description

Chemical Engineering uses chemistry, mathematics, biology and physics to provide an integrated approach to understanding the changes which take place in processes, from molecular to global scale, and to create methods which can change chemical or physical composition, energy content, structure, or physical state, ie mathematics and science in action. The subject also involves the application of knowledge to the design, development and operation of plants that process chemical and related products. It borders and overlaps on areas such as mechanical, electrical and civil engineering, chemistry, materials science and biology. Sandwich degrees with a year in industry are four- or five-year programmes with a one-year industrial placement (which may be international) in the penultimate year.

Modules

Preliminary year (level 0): Mathematics; physical science; engineering (includes: statics; dynamics; engineering drawing and design; fluid mechanics and thermodynamics; applied electricity; experimental methods). Level 1: Mathematics; computing; chemical engineering; chemistry; electrical engineering; solids and structures; materials science; chemical process principles. Level 2: Fluid and particle mechanics; materials technology; process heat transfer; process mass transfer; food science for engineers; computer-aided design; chemical engineering laboratory practice; safety and design codes; energy utilisation; process thermodynamics; instrumentation and control; computer aided applications; food technology for engineers; professional studies. Level 3: Food machinery; mass transfer; transport phenomena; management and administration; professional studies; reaction engineering; design problem; research project; biochemical engineering; two-phase flow; loss prevention; plant layout; heat and mass transfer; industrial project.

Although the chemicals industry, like a lot of manufacturing, had a tough time during the recession, the UK has had a shortage of chemical engineers for a while now so starting salaries are good. In fact, across the UK, only doctors and dentists bettered the average starting salary for chemical engineering graduates, and in Scotland, where the best starting salaries for chemical engineers are to be found (thanks to the oil and gas industry), even dentists lagged behind last year. So if you want to make good money from the start, this is the degree to take. Most graduates take a longer course that leads to an MEng – which is what you need to take if you want to be a Chartered Engineer. Chemical engineers are also more likely than other engineers to take doctorates and go into research roles, so if you want to take an engineering subject but fancy a research job, this might be a good subject to take.
