Do you want to tackle major global issues like defence against coastal flooding during climate change? Do you want to design the offshore structures necessary to maintain security of energy supply? You will understand how these structures are protected from erosion and will apply engineering and design principles to create experimental systems such as marine renewable energy devices, that you will test in the coastal and ocean basins and wave flumes located in our £19 million Marine Building.

You will be supported and inspired by research-active academic staff, many of whom hold Chartered Engineer status. You will graduate as a civil engineer, enriched with the specialist coastal skills and experience highly sought by employers across the sector, ready to be the future of coastal safety and security on a changing planet.

* Distinguish yourself professionally with an accredited degree. Our BEng (Hons) is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). You'll qualify for membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Institution of Structural Engineers.

* Develop your professional skills including communication, self-management, team working and leadership so you’re ready to hit the ground running in your future career.

Modules

During your first year, you’ll be introduced to key areas that form the basis of knowledge for a professional engineer. You’ll study the mathematics of engineering and get to grips with AutoCAD, developing your IT and design skills. We’ll introduce you to geotechnics and the properties of engineering materials, as well as technical themes like hydraulics, structural analysis and surveying. You’ll gain transferable skills through a module on professional studies.

In year two explore the core disciplines of civil engineering, from structural analysis and design to hydraulic engineering and construction, through lectures, practical activities, site visits and a field course. We’ll also introduce you to coastal engineering and the basics of wave and tidal theory.

Between years two and three you’ll have the opportunity to spend a year in paid professional employment. We’ll support you in finding a suitable placement and visit you twice during the course of this year. As well as providing an invaluable real world experience, a year in industry can often lead to job offers from the placement company.

In your final year you’ll refine your theoretical, practical and design skills. You’ll learn about wave and coastal structure design, and the reliability and risks involved. Your studies will culminate in an industry-focused group design project. You’ll spend much of the year completing a research-based individual project – that focuses on laboratory experiments, computer-aided modelling, or field work linked to our staff’s research and professional interests.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This course sits within a very specialised subject area for the naval industries, and there aren't many students who take this subject each year. For those who did last year, jobs as engineers or ship officers were much the most common. As the UK has always been a seafaring nation, and the naval industry is still important here, starting salaries can be good (the average was £24,500 last year) and, surprise surprise, based in port towns, so this is great if you'd like to be near (or on!) the sea.
