Our course has been developed to cater for the property industry's growing need for financially-literate graduates with specialist investment and finance knowledge. There is an ever-growing relationship between property, investment and financial markets, making the field increasingly dynamic and graduates within it some of the highest paid.

You'll develop core property industry knowledge and skills in areas including investment and financial project management, financial risk management, negotiation, valuation, portfolio management, investment appraisal, business planning, financial regulations and sustainability of financial investment projects.

Modules

All modules are core. Year One: Professional, Academic and Business Skills - This module provides you with an introduction to academic study and to the built environment professions and the nature of the work carried out by surveyors • Surveying Skills - This module will provide you with an introduction to practice and surveying skills which will be developed throughout the course of your degree and in the workplace • Construction – This Construction module introduces you to a range of technical, practical and environmental principles involved in the construction of a range of traditional and non-traditional buildings •Economics and Valuation - This module introduces property economics, the links between the economy and the property market as well as giving you a overview of property valuation •Law - This module introduces you to the English legal system and its relationship with European Union law •Planning and Land Use - This module introduces the concepts and principles of the planning system. Year Two: Valuation - In this module you will develop knowledge and understanding of the different approaches to the valuation of property and examines the application of different techniques employed in the valuation process • Real Estate Economics - This module has been designed to help you develop an understanding of the links between the wider economy and the property industry • Property Management and Agency - This module provides an introduction to the principles, procedures and practices of commercial estate management, property agency and Landlord & Tenant law • Property Development: Principles and Practice – You’ll be introduced to the development process and the commercial drivers behind it • Employability and Commercial Awareness – You’ll be introduced to the requirements for the RICS Assessment of Professional practice and the principles of Employment Law, Health and Safety at Work Regulations and related procedures. Final Year: Investment Appraisal and Valuation – Throughout this module you’ll learn to develop detailed and critical understanding of principles, theories, techniques and practices relating to the appraisal and valuation of capital investments, with particular emphasis on real estate investments • Portfolio and Fund Management – You’ll learn the key principles of investment portfolio management theory and practice in the context of direct and indirect property investment vehicles • Real Estate Funding - This module is designed to develop a wide range of and critical understanding of the principles, theories, techniques and practices relating to: property and project finance, corporate finance, financial risk management, property taxation and property finance negligence • Research Project – You’ll investigate a topic of your choice in an extended project.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.
