Primary teaching

This joint honours programme allows you to study two subjects widening your career options alongside children and their families. You will gain valuable real-world experience and skills through placements and projects, giving you a head-start in meeting the needs of graduate employers. The Early Years strand gives you the opportunity to gain the professional Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).**Please note that 2018 will be the final intake of this course.**

Modules

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study two subject areas: Early Years, and Education Studies. During your Early Years modules, you will develop your understanding of the social construct of childhood and the key importance of the holistic nature of the development of children aged up to five years. The modules have been developed to meet your needs in working alongside very young children and their families in diverse settings, in care and education. Education Studies modules consider all facets of how we learn and develop, as well as looking in detail at how education systems are organised, particularly the English system. Alongside these subjects you will study the following core modules to develop your transferrable and employability skills: 1. Developing Learning in Higher Education, 2. Learning in Contexts, 3. Field Placement (preparation) and optional modules of a Capstone Project or Placement.

When you look at employment stats, bear in mind that a lot of students are already working in education when they take this type of course and are studying to help their career development. This means they already have jobs when they start their course, and a lot of graduates continue to study, whilst working, when they complete their courses. What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The stats above mainly cover teaching degrees for training and qualifying in primary school education. These tend to be three or four-year courses — check with course tutors about how long you will need to study to get your Qualified Teacher Status. Most graduates go into teaching roles — usually primary school teaching, so these courses have good employment rates and starting salaries. We have a shortage of teachers of all kinds, which is deepening, and whilst many of the most severe are at secondary level, the prospects for this degree are not likely to take a downturn any time soon.
