Construction

Construction managers supervise operations to ensure projects are completed safely, on time and within budget. You'll be the main point of contact for subcontractors and the public, overseeing all aspects of a project, from quality management to monitoring progress and costs.

We have over 30 years’ experience in developing successful construction graduates.

Our Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)-accredited course offers a balance of vocational and theoretical content. Linking the design and construction of buildings, the course focuses on the technical, professional and managerial aspects of construction projects. With an emphasis on buildings, sustainability, technology and management, you’ll develop a wealth of knowledge and the professional skills required to successfully manage complex construction projects.

You'll benefit from excellent employability prospects - 100% of our BSc (Hons) Construction Management sandwich graduates are in a professional or managerial job, just six months after graduation, earning an average salary of £26,700 (DLHE survey 2015/16). Due to a skills shortage and a boom in the construction industry, construction management graduates are heavily sought after. Our students are satisfied too - 96% of our sandwich students agreed that they were satisfied with the learning experience on their course (National Student Survey 2016).

Apply your learning to the real world and network with experts in industry, with opportunities to take part in site visits and a residential surveying trip (included in course fees). Take part in live projects as part of the course, A recent project saw students work with Transport for London on proposing various upgrade projects. You'll also have the opportunity to undertake a one-year work placement in industry.

You can also benefit from flexible study options, tailoring your studies to your interests; and if you have an outstanding first year, you'll have the opportunity to transfer on to our BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management course.

Modules

All the modules on this course are core. Year One modules: Fundamentals of Construction - This module will introduce you to the domestic construction industry, and the technology associated with it, looking at modern and sustainable forms of construction • Introduction to Measurement and Cost – Through this module you’ll develop your understanding of measurement principles and your ability to apply measurement skills • Architectural Science and Building Engineering - This module will introduce you to the methods of providing comfortable internal thermal, visual and acoustic environments - the ways in which buildings are appropriately heated, cooled, quite and illuminated • Numerical and Professional Skills for the Construction Industry - This module will introduce you to some of the important roles carried out by professionals, in order to create the built environment, developing your understanding of the nature of the construction industry • Law and Health & Safety - On this module you'll study the English Legal System and its relationship to European Union law, to help you understand how law is made, administered and enforced. Year Two: Construction Technology – You’ll focus on industrial and commercial buildings. The key aim is for you to understand modern and traditional building technologies • Engineering Surveying - The aim of this module is to introduce you to the basic principles and purposes of engineering surveying. You'll learn the theory in lectures and tutors, with hands-on seminar and laboratory sessions introducing the practical surveying field skills required by industry • Residential Field Trip - The module will culminate in a week long residential field trip, where you'll put into practice the skills that you've learnt throughout the module. Working in groups, you'll plan, manage and assess your own programme to meet set targets • Sustainable Technology with Environmental Control - In this module you will explore the techniques of sustainability used in building technology and environmental engineering • Contract Administration: Control and Finance - Contract administration is the study of construction contracts and practice. Construction related contracts are widely used in the industry and play an important role in your working practices • Construction Management Practice and Procedures - The module introduces you to the principles and practice of a small to medium construction company, its behavioural management system and the operation of its projects • Law and Contemporary Economics - This module will develop your understanding of health and safety responsibilities and encourage and enhance your understanding of legal duties and responsibilities. Placement Year: You’ll get the opportunity to spend a year working in industry, which will give you an opportunity to gain invaluable hands-n experience and will open exciting opportunities for your future career. Final Year: Construction Procurement and International Studies - This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of the UK and international construction industry and the strategies which can be adopted by clients to successfully procure construction projects • Corporate Management - This module will further develop your knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the corporate, financial and operational environment in which different construction organisations, their management and how their clients operate • Construction Management Project - This module will integrate your knowledge and skills, and their application to construction production management • Industrial Practice for Construction Managers - This module provides a holistic overview of the fundamental principles of the strategic and operational management of a construction project • Dissertation - This module offers an opportunity to develop and utilise a range of research skills to produce a thesis based on a topic you have selected.
