Newman University has developed an innovative foundation year for their social science degrees. The pre-degree year of this four year course, if passed, leads into the same study programme as the 3 year joint honours degree course in Psychology and Counselling Studies.

This foundation year enables those unable to access the traditional UCAS tariff requirements for a three year degree, an alternative route into beginning and ultimately gaining an honours degree.

A wide range of careers are available across a number of environments such as education, health and social care in the public, private and third sectors. Although not a social work degree, the issues covered on this course would be suitable for people considering gaining postgraduate qualifications to become a social worker. Youth work, social policy development, outreach work and working with children are also potential careers for graduates of this degree. Supporting children, young people and vulnerable families is an increasingly high profile area of social policy. This course is one of a small number of Honours degree level programmes designed to give you the knowledge and skills to understand the social, economic, educational, political and cultural issues and barriers facing children, young people and families, particularly in socially disadvantaged areas. Professionals working with children and young people are increasingly required to have formal qualifications recognising their expertise in these areas. Relevant work experience at a high level is essential for people intending to develop their careers in this area. This is why this course has been designed to enable you to gain experience throughout your studies, which will be useful when you are seeking positions after graduation. It is intended that graduates from this course will develop into managers working in education, health, or social care capable of dealing with multi-agency working with a range of knowledge and inter-personal skills.

We're short of social workers - so if you want a degree that is in demand, then this could be the one for you! There's a shortage of social workers all over the UK, and graduates can specialise in specific fields such as mental health or children's social work. If you decide social work is not for you, then social work graduates also often go into management, education, youth and community work and even nursing. Starting salaries for this degree can reflect the high proportion of graduates who choose a social work career - social work graduates get paid, on average, more than graduates overall, but not all options pay as well as social work.
