Course description

This wide-ranging, four-year MEng degree integrates a year of Masterâ??s-level study and an industrial placement. You will develop core electronic engineering skills and study specialist topics exploring areas such as the design of machines and drives, industrial automation and robotics, semiconductor device fabrication. You will also complete several design projects to showcase your skills to future employers.

Modules

Stage 1: Electromagnetism; circuit theory; analogue and physical electronics; communication studies; C++ programming; electromagnetic devices; digital electronics; linear systems and signals; computer engineering; project. Stage 2: Electromagnetism; automatic control; analogue electronics; communications; electrical systems and machines; digital electronics; linear systems and signals; computer engineering; discrete transforms; project management; project; option: physical electronics or mechanical engineering. After Stage 2: Students can choose either to continue with a broad subject choice; or to specialise in: electrical power; industrial automation; computing; communications or microelectronics; modules include technical options as well as non-technical ones such as management-related subjects and modern foreign languages. Stage 3: Individual project and dissertation; study project; business management; options: design of VLSI systems; design of machines and drives; data communications; radiowave engineering and modules from the BEng degree. Final year: Industrial project; technical review; group design work; extended course work on applications and design.

The recession has made things difficult for graduates in this subject and you would normally expect a lower unemployment rate – but most graduates do get jobs quite quickly after university, and starting salaries are pretty good. The most common jobs are in telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, but there is some crossover with the computing industry, so many graduates start work in IT and computing jobs. At the moment, there's a particular demand for electrical engineers in the oil and gas industries, electronics and the car and aerospace industries. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification – this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
