International Business is important because most businesses operate in the global marketplace. This degree provides you with the business knowledge and cross-cultural management skills you will need in order to develop and maintain international business relationships in often volatile political, cultural and economic/financial environments. A degree in business provides a solid foundation to build your career as a high-earning professional. Business professionals are good at leading teams; have sound commercial awareness; are adept at spotting enterprising opportunities; can manage projects and are excellent problem solvers. There are opportunities to participate in business and enterprise competitions, receive support and advice from mentors from our Innospace graduate incubator and business start-up unit, and to network with successful entrepreneurs and consultants who contribute as guest lecturers and placement employers. Economics - Economics is concerned with the optimal use of resources. Studying economics develops your knowledge of the factors influencing how international organisations, governments, companies, domestic financial institutions and individuals invest and allocate their resources including money. Economists evaluate and compare the costs and benefits of different courses of action, considering issues such as employment, the distribution of income and wealth, government spending, investment, productivity and growth, international trade, finance and governments' debt servicing. You will develop skills valued by employers, such as analytical and numerical skills, problem solving and the ability to interpret data, extract and understand information. This is a Combined Honours degree programme, providing the flexibility for you to study two subjects at degree level. Your choice of combination can be shaped to suit your interests, strengths and career ambitions. Studying a Combined Honours programme, the combinations you may choose to study will vary each year, so you may wish to study more units of one subject rather than the other. In Year 1 you will study equal amounts of your two subjects. In Year 2 the balance may vary from equal amounts of each subject to a major/minor combination where you focus more on one of your subjects. In Final Year, you may continue to study both subjects on an equal or major/minor basis. Whatever your chosen subject combination, you will be able to demonstrate to future employers your flexibility and breadth of experience and skills.
You will have access to leading financial and statistical software used by global firms, such as Bloomberg and STATA and benefit from a friendly and supportive environment, with access to an award-winning Accounting, Finance and Economics (AFE) Student Society. There are opportunities to participate in business competitions and gain advice from successful entrepreneurs and business consultants. This is a four year degree that includes a year of study abroad, also referred to as ‘Exchange’. You will usually go on an exchange on your third year of study, so you’ll begin planning and applying for your exchange in your first and second year. Study abroad (exchange) opportunities exist throughout Europe, through the Erasmus+ programme. We also offer global exchange opportunities in the USA, Asia and Australasia. We are constantly growing our international exchange partnerships and have long-standing relationships with universities across the world who have welcomed our students as part of our exchange programme.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

This is a degree in demand, as business increasingly needs workers who can examine and explain complex data. And yet the number of economics graduates fell by nearly 10% last year, which means demand is even greater. As so many economic grads go into banking and finance, it's not surprising that over half of all 2015's economics graduates who did go into work were working in London. And don't think it's just the finance industry that's interested in these graduates - there's a significant number who enter the IT industry to work with data as analysts and consultants. It's quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy and management consultancy which may require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications - so don’t assume you won’t have to take any more exams once you leave uni. And the incentive to take them, of course, is better pay, which will be on top of an already healthy average starting salary of over £30,000 for graduates working in the capital.
