Sport participation rates are forecast to increase over the coming years and the role of sport science within grassroots and elite sport has become increasingly important.

Providing an understanding of sports performance and the factors that affect behaviour in sport this two year full time course will provide you with knowledge of the three main disciplines of sport science identified by BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Science) these being:? Physiology, Biomechanics, Psychology. The first year provides learners with a firm understanding of the fundamentals in these areas. The second year then builds on this and examines the ‘application’ of these disciplines in order to enhance performance.

The programme aims to equip individuals with the skills, knowledge, personal qualities, and attitudes appropriate for successful transition into an appropriate career within the industry. It provides opportunities for students to develop their understanding both academically and vocationally through practical reflective practice. To further enhance this, the work related element of the course helps students to interact with the industry and allows for opportunity to network and develop employability links with people already working in the industry.

The programme promotes independent learning and aims to produce learners who are reflective practitioners who are able to assimilate, evaluate and critically appraise information. It also aims to produce candidates with a range of skills to support future employment and life?long learning.

Modules

Year 1 -

Foundations of Physiological and Psychological Training (30 credits)
This module aims to introduce students to the physiological foundations of sport training and conditioning and the nature of sport psychology as a contemporary discipline. It will examine how techniques employed in physiological training and psychology can help improve sporting performance.

Bioenergetics and Metabolism (30 credits)
This unit will provide foundation knowledge which is fundamental to the study of energy metabolism and nutrition for human movement.

Biomechanics Theory and Application (30 credits)
This unit will provide an introduction to human anatomy, kinesiology and the biomechanical principles that are relevant to movement during sport and exercise.

Professional and Academic Practice (30 credits)
This unit underpins all other units and helps develop essential academic and professional skills in order to achieve success on the course and beyond.

Year 2 -

Biomechanics of Strength and Conditioning Theory and Application (30 credits)
This unit aims to provide the student with an understanding of the principles of theory and practice, bridging the gap between science and application that has been a driving force in the field of strength and conditioning. This will include the assessment and evaluation of athletes and athletic performance, the evaluation of the physiological, biomechanical, nutritional and psychological demands of sports in relation to training and the development of strength and conditioning programmes.

Psychology of Sports Performance (30 credits)
This unit will provide students with a detailed analysis of mental skills training techniques and investigate where these techniques can be applied in order to enhance sports performance. It will also examine key areas such as critical moments, identity, transitions and retirement and focus upon the many challenges that athletes face as they seek to progress within their sport.

Exercise Physiology Theory and Application (30 credits)
To equip students with knowledge of the physiological responses of sporting demands and the environment; along with nutrition and ergogenic strategies to enhance performance.

Practice Based Research (30 credits)
Develops essential research skills in order to operate at this level; which then links to work related activity of your choice. Here you will have the opportunity link theory into practice and gain essential work related knowledge.

The course will be delivered via lectures, seminars, tutorial, practical sessions, guest speakers / visits, independent study. The course encompasses a variety of assessment methods, involving both individual and group assessments.
