Systems Engineering is a structured comprehensive approach to solving today's complex technical challenges, particularly those related to the design and development of highly sophisticated systems, such as aircraft, ships, automobiles, telecommunications networks, energy infrastructures or information management systems. The complex integrated systems that influence so many domains in today's society (transport, health, finance, security, military, education, energy etc) ideally should be designed by considering the system as a whole. That includes looking across all of the component parts of a system and along the whole system lifecycle from feasibility through design, manufacture and operations, to disposal. It is the Systems Engineer's job to integrate all the key elements in a system including hardware, software, firmware, people, information, techniques, facilities and services, to achieve the required system capability and performance. Our unique MEng and BEng Systems Engineering courses aim to equip the graduates with knowledge and understanding of a range of Systems Engineering tools and methods together with experience of applying these tools in a variety of individual and group projects across different engineering and business domains. In addition to teaching engineering theory and practice, the courses aim to develop: an analytical approach to model, understand, quantify and characterise problems; ability to understand customer needs and define functional requirements, creativity to explore innovative 'out of the box' approaches and solutions; to take an holistic view of the problem space; an awareness of the many disciplines that impact on system design; strong communication and team building skills; leadership and people skills.
Years 1 and 2: Areas studied include aircraft design, circuits, control system design, electronics, electromagnetism, mathematics, mechanics, programming and software design, signals and systems, systems integration, and systems methods. Optional placement/study year Salaried professional placement and/or overseas study. Final year: Areas studied include enterprise systems engineering, human factors in systems design, group project, individual project, materials properties and application, systems diagnostics, systems engineering applications theory, and understanding complexity.
