The vast majority of modern computer system development is targeted at embedded, portable, household or industrial systems, such as mobile phones, tablets, set-top boxes, games consoles, car-building robots or in-vehicle entertainment. To develop such exciting new products, the embedded systems industry needs graduates having not just software skills, but also the expertise to design specific electronic solutions and their electrical connections to the outside world. Our Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering course will equip you with the digital electronic, microprocessor and software skills to design, build and integrate the technologies behind the products of the future. Our Electronics based courses have a common first year – your 'essential tool kit'. This gives the flexibility to change course at the end of Year 1 or in some cases at the end of Year 2. It also means that students starting on the BEng course can change to the MEng course if their first year performance is sufficiently strong. Years 1 and 2 of the BEng and MEng courses are similar; from there on each course develops its own flavour and engineering emphasis and each student can further tailor their course with optional modules to suit personal preferences and aptitudes.
Years 1 and 2: Areas studied include circuits, computer architecture, electronics electromagnetism, introduction to fpga, mathematics, programming and software design, signals and systems, and software engineering. Year 3 Areas studied include advanced FPGAs, applying management theory, business management, digital interfacing and instrumentation, electronic system design with FPGA, embedded software development, group project, individual project, and real-time software engineering.
