AAB - ABB (excluding General Studies, Critical Thinking, Communication and Culture and Citizenship Studies). In some circumstances we may ask applicants to achieve specific grades in certain subjects. While no specific A Level (or equivalent) subjects are required, we strongly prefer combinations drawn from traditional (academic) subjects to demonstrate a range of numerical, analytical and discursive abilities. These A Levels include: Maths/Further Maths, Business Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, English Language/Literature, Languages (non-native) Government and Politics, Law, and Statistics.

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects or a combination of the Pre-U and A levels, provided a minimum of three subjects overall are taken. We recognise the benefit of the Global Perspectives and Research (GPR) course in developing independent study and research skills. While we would consider this as evidence of motivation to study a specific subject in more depth, we do not generally include it as part of our offer conditions. However, it may be used to further consider an application upon receipt of final examination results.

Business has been transformed by the emergence of big data, social media, cloud and mobile-based technology and created exciting new employment prospects.

This broad, flexible course gives you the core business and management skills to be a successful manager, combined with the knowledge and understanding of how businesses can exploit new digital innovations from a non-technical management perspective.

The wide variety of optional modules, including a final year project option, allows you to tailor the course to the areas of business you are most interested in. This flexibility will assist you in developing a wide range of core business skills that will enhance your employability helping you stand out in the increasingly competitive graduate job market.

Taking a non-technical, business manager’s perspective, you will learn about the major management functions and contemporary business issues such as managing big data and creating intelligent organisations, giving you valuable digital management knowledge that is needed in every area of business.

You can also choose an optional project in the final year to study an information management issue of your choice in more depth. Through the project you can extend your specialist knowledge in key business areas to increase your employability and research real business issues.

Modules

Year 1:
Areas studied include organisational behaviour, skills for study and employment, financial framework, quantitative methods, information management, marketing, microeconomics, business modelling, intelligent organisations and agile data management.
You are required to study 120 credits in year one. All the modules in year one are compulsory.

Year 2:
Areas studied include business information management, human resources, decision making analysis, data systems, accounting, brand management, digital resilience and information systems development.
You are required to study 120 credits in year two, including 40 credits optional modules. Some pre-requisites and restrictions may apply.

Optional placement/study year:
Optional salaried professional placement and/or
overseas study.

Year 4:
Areas studied include strategic management, information management, technology and managing big data.
You are required to study 120 credits in the final year, including 70 credits optional modules. Some pre-requisites and restrictions may apply.

Assessment methods

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 50% coursework and 50% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% examination.

Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, contribution in tutorials, group work, presentations, business reports, problem-sheets and computer-based exercises.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k. Graduates with good degree grades in business studies are much more likely to get good jobs, so don’t be complacent, and keep a close eye on your grades.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Information services covers a broad range of degree options including librarianship and museum studies, which are usually only taken by a small number of students at first degree level. These areas tend to be much more popular at postgraduate level - and with a lot of competition for jobs in libraries and museums, most (but not all) of these jobs go to holders of Masters qualifications.
