Human Biology with a Foundation Year is available to students performing at a very high standard in a chosen sport, who wish to study at Loughborough, but do not have the required qualifications due to sporting commitments. It is ideal for students who wish to combine their sports training with academic study.

Human Biology with a Foundation Year enables entry into our Human Biology degree course for students that that are classed as elite athletes by our performance sport centre and have not got the qualifications required for direct entry.

It is a one year programme which will enable you to progress onto the first year of Human Biology, provided the relevant progression criteria are met.

During the year you will undertake core modules in Sport Science and options from subjects including Biology (preferred), Maths and Chemistry.

Completing a foundation year can be a real attribute to your overall degree success. It not only opens doors to courses that may have previously looked closed, but also provides a sound base on which to establish a successful academic career. Many who have completed the foundation year have also said how beneficial it was to them in supporting their transition into University life.

As an elite athlete or elite level coach studying at the UK’s top sporting university, you will benefit from a package of excellent coaching, expert strength and conditioning, sport medicine support and heavily discounted gym membership in addition to access to our extensive sports and training facilities, where possible.

Assessment methods

Modules are assessed by a combination of written exams and / or coursework assignments. Some modules are continually assessed throughout the year.

Typical coursework assignments include: laboratory reports, essays, presentations, assessed tutorials, workshops, peer review (review fellow students’ performance) and dissertations.

It is expected that for every hour you are in a structured class, you should spend two hours of your own time researching, writing up, learning work or doing set questions etc.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The stats here cover not just anatomy, physiology and pathology courses, but also neuroscience and physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is much the most popular of the four. So, a lot of the data you’re looking at is really for physiotherapists, who have excellent employment rates - although all the subjects under this group do better than average. Anatomy and physiology graduates often take further study — usually moving on to a medical degree - and neurosciences graduates opt for a more academic route in study. Pathology graduates tend to go into work. Physiotherapy graduates mainly go straight into work, and a large majority got into physiotherapy roles within six months of graduation in 2016, usually either in hospitals or private practice. There are shortages of graduates in all of these disciplines although issues with funding roles, particularly in physiotherapy, still mean that these degrees are not a guaranteed path to a job - but the chances of getting a job are very good.
