In Drama, you will explore play texts, theoretical writings, performance traditions and techniques, and examine the theatre’s role and function in society throughout history.

We explore traditional and avant-garde theatre traditions and contemporary performance practices. Modules in film production and playwriting are also available. Practical work takes place primarily in the Department’s theatre and studios and all practical modules include exploration of technical theatre, lighting, sound, set and costume. The main teaching modes comprise seminar discussion and practical workshop sessions.

In English, you can choose modules from a range of options, which can include writings from the Renaissance period to the 21st century, language study and creative writing. Our academics are recognised for their expertise in areas such as contemporary texts and theory, culture and communication, creative writing, and literature from the 16th century to the present day. This wide range of specialist knowledge offers you the freedom to construct a course covering literature and language within a broad range of fields and approaches, so providing a stimulating environment for study.

Modules

In the first year you will take five core modules and select one optional module. In Drama, modules will develop core performance skills across a range of periods and styles and introduce you to reflective and critical practices. In English you will take modules exploring a range of literary genres, language studies, literary theory and criticism.

In year 2 you will take two core modules and select four optional modules. In year 2 your Drama modules deepen your theoretical knowledge and broadens the understanding of theatre across a variety of performance practices. You can choose to develop you acting skills or focus on textual and theoretical study of theatre. English modules allow you to develop your understanding of the literature of different historical periods and to study a range of well-known and less familiar writings that will extend your knowledge and confidence in the subject.

In the final year our modules give you the opportunity to broaden your studies and specialise even further in your own areas of interest. Drama modules offer you a variety of options that can focus on practical work, especially in the Theatre Practice module, or complement your English study with a range of theoretical modules. There are no core modules in the final year so you select optional modules totaling 120 credits.

The course is assessed through coursework, using various methods according to the module being studied.

Methods include: practical performance, essays/reflective work, seminar participation, online in-class tests, annotated bibliographies, group projects, in-class presentations, research projects, workbook.log books, peer assessments and dissertation.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Drama is a very popular degree subject — in 2015, over 5,000 degrees were awarded to UK graduates. With so many graduates around, jobs in acting are very sought-after and often gained through personal contacts, or through your careers service so be prepared to practise your people skills and to make full use of your university facilities. But there are lots of roles in the arts for drama graduates, in direction, production, audio-visual, set and clothing design and PR. The skills taught by drama courses can be useful elsewhere — a lot of the economy can use people who can perform and present in front of others, and so drama graduates can be found in teaching, management, advertising, project and events organisation and community work. Be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common, as are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once — one in ten drama graduates last year had more than one job on the go at once after six months. And starting salaries are not the best - but nevertheless the large majority of drama graduates going into acting still felt that it was just the job for them regardless of pay.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

English is one of the most popular degree subjects and in 2015, more than 11,000 students graduated with English degrees - although this does represent a fall from recent years. As good communication is so important to modern business, you can find English graduates in all parts of the economy, although obviously, you can't expect to get a job in science or engineering (computing is a different matter - it's not common but good language skills can be useful in the computing industry). There's little difference in outcomes between English language and English literature degrees, so don't worry and choose the one that suits you best. More English grads took another postgraduate course when they finished their degree than grads from any other subject - this is an important option. Teacher training was a common choice of second degree, as was further study of English, and journalism courses. But many English graduates changed course and trained in law, marketing or other languages -or even subjects further afield such as computing, psychology and even nursing. This is a very flexible degree which gives you a lot of options
