Many real-world problems are solved by a close-knit combination of mathematical and computational techniques. Our MSci Computer Science and Mathematics degree will equip you with essential skills in both of these areas and their intersection.

Our Computer Science and Mathematics course aims to equip students with a powerful set of skills to deal with such tasks, providing an excellent grounding for any career at the interface between computing and mathematics, as well as most careers that are traditionally open to single honours graduates in either of the two disciplines.

The course is divided equally into topics from computer science and mathematics so that graduates have a wide range of experience in both areas. The core mathematics subjects required for business, industry and academia are studied in the first two years of this course, with a particular emphasis on computational methods. The core computer science subjects studied in the first two years have a particular emphasis on mathematical aspects of computer science. The third year of our Computer Science and Mathematics degree involves a project that draws on knowledge of computer science and mathematics as well as allowing the student to taylor their degree to their individual preferences by choosing from a range of optional specialised modules in both subjects.

The MSci year provides a broad understanding and study of entrepreneurship, further in-depth mathematical modelling and a significant, research-based individual project conducted with a member of academic staff.

Modules

Year 1: Areas studied include software engineering, computer applications in mathematics, databases, geometry, algorithms, programming, probability and statistics, linear algebra, and logic.

Year 2: Areas studied include computer graphics, formal languages, AI methods, number theory, analysis, numerical methods and team projects.

Year 3: Areas studied include optional specialised subjects from computer science and from mathematics, and a computer science and mathematics project.

Final year: Areas studied include enterprise technology for computer scientists, mathematical modelling and a thesis project.

Assessment methods

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.

Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
