Business with a Foundation Year is only available to students performing at a very high standard in a chosen sport, who wish to study at Loughborough, but do not have the required qualifications due to sporting commitments.

It is ideal for students who wish to combine their sports training with academic study. The course enables entry into any of our accounting, finance, business and management courses for students that are classed as elite athletes by our performance sport centre and have not got the qualifications required for direct entry.

It is a one year course which will enable you to progress onto the first year of your chosen degree course, provided the relevant progression criteria are met.

During the year you will undertake core modules in Business, Psychology with Sociology and a Mathematics module, and choose options from Economics and Sport Science. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials.

Our foundation course is taught in-house by University staff. As a student on the course you will be a member the University, with full access to the Students’ Union, clubs, societies, sports facilities and support departments. Completing a foundation year can be a real attribute to your overall degree success. It not only opens doors to courses that may have previously looked closed, but also provides a sound base on which to establish a successful academic career. Many who have completed the foundation year have also said how beneficial it was to them in supporting their transition into University life.

As an elite athlete or elite level coach studying at the UK’s top sporting university, you will benefit from a package of excellent coaching, expert strength and conditioning, sport medicine support and heavily discounted gym membership in addition to access to our extensive sports and training facilities, where possible.

Assessment methods

Foundation modules are assessed via written exams and/or coursework assignments. Some modules are continually assessed throughout the year. Typical coursework assignments include: laboratory reports, essays, presentations, assessed tutorials, workshops and peer review (review fellow students’ performance). It is expected that for every hour you are in a structured class, you should spend two hours of your own time researching, writing up, learning work or doing set questions etc.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The number of business studies graduates fell significantly last year after a long period of increase. But there were still more than 14,000 degrees awarded and this is the third most popular subject for new graduates. Because so many graduates get business studies degrees, you can find them everywhere in the economy, and very few jobs are completely out of reach for a good business studies graduate. Around 40% go into jobs in finance, sales, recruitment, management (particularly retail) or marketing. There is also a small (but well paid) group who take their technical skills into computing and IT. Thousands of graduates from this subject go into professional jobs every year, and average starting salaries are above the average for all subjects and particularly healthy in London where they top £25k.
