Biochemistry is a rapidly developing, constantly advancing field of study - the branch of science that explores the chemical processes within, and related to, living organisms. The discoveries of biochemists are vital to our understanding of human life, health and disease. They will help us solve global challenges, like our ageing population, and find cures, interventions and ways to improve our health. Today is an incredible time to become part of this fascinating area of study, with opportunities for highly-skilled biochemists both wide-ranging and likely to grow.This exciting course offers a thorough grounding in biology and chemistry, with an emphasis on practical laboratory work. The programme is centred on molecular level processes and effects, particularly focusing on those of importance for human health.Over the duration of the course you will explore fundamental chemistry, cell biology, genetics and molecular biology, cellular signalling and genomics, while optional modules allow you to delve into the genetics of health, drug metabolosm, virology and oncology.Drawing on Loughborough's multidisciplinary expertise in areas like regenerative medicine, health, nutrition and physical activity, our Biochemistry MSci degree is one of our recently launched courses in Biosciences made possible by STEMLab - 17 million investment in new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities including a suite of bio-laboratories.Studying Biochemistry (MSci) at Loughborough you will benefit from the teaching and research insights of our internationally renowned academic staff.

Year 1
Areas studied may include fundamental chemistry, cell
biology, structure and reactivity, genetics and molecular
biology, biochemistry and data analysis and scientific skills.

Year 2
Areas studied may include cellular signalling and
transport, functional genomics, lab skills, metabolism
and research methods.

Optional placement/study year
Optional professional placement and/or overseas study.

Year 4
Areas studied may include a research project as well
as options including advanced genetics of health,
pharmaceutical analysis and drug metabolism and
virology and oncology.

Final year MSci
In addition to a major independent research project
on a chosen subject of interest, other areas studied
may include contemporary health issues and advanced
laboratory and research methods in biology.

Assessment methods

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination. Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Around 2,500 graduates got degrees in this demanding but valuable subject last year. Graduates who want a career in research usually take postgraduate qualifications - over a third of graduates in the subject took this option - but those who want to start work when they graduate have a lot to choose from.
