Our MEng Mechanical Engineering with Management has been designed to meet the growing demand for graduates with both engineering knowledge and management skills.

This degree is particularly relevant if you are interested in a management career where you will be required to be a leader and strategic planner as well as an engineer.

The course aims to produce high quality mechanical engineers with good technical skills who also have the operational management skills demanded by many industrial sectors. Alongside the core engineering syllabus you will learn essential management techniques in areas such as:
•operational research
•logistics planning
•core business skills.

LJMU is currently seeking Institution of Mechanical Engineers accreditation for this new programme. Such accreditation will qualify you for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Industry links and placement opportunities

Links with national and international companies, such as BMW, Airbus Industries, Rolls Royce and Shell mean that the course is tailored to the needs of employers. Capitalising on these and other links with industry, you will be encouraged to complete a year’s paid placement out industry so that you can apply what you have learnt at University in the workplace. Such experience will enhance your CV and your future job prospects.

Plus you will have access to specialist labs and facilities, including the Vehicle Engineering Laboratory and have the opportunity to join the LJMU Racing Team, which designs, builds and races a single-seater racing car on professional circuits as part of the Formula Student competition.

What is an integrated master’s (MEng) programme?

All of our MEng programmes in Mechanical Engineering are integrated master's degrees. This means that they combine undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single course.

What are the benefits of completing an MEng degree?
•You will graduate with a Master’s level degree without having to apply for an MSc course
•You will gain a depth of specialist knowledge and experience highly sought after by employers
•Accredited MEng degrees enable graduates to gain CEng status without further study. Gaining professional status will be of considerable benefit to you in your future career
•You will enjoy excellent career prospects and expect to command higher salaries than graduates with a BEng

What financial support is available to MEng students?

You will be eligible to apply for the same financial support as other undergraduates for the duration of your MEng. This includes student loans to cover your tuition fees and living expenses plus means-tested grants and bursaries. This financial support is not available to students who enrol on an MSc degree after completing a BEng programme.

Furthermore, if you are awarded an LJMU scholarship – worth £1,000 or £10,000 – you will receive this award for every year of your degree as well.

Assessment methods

Assessment is usually via a combination of exams and coursework, and sometimes by a portfolio of work, depending on the subject. Level 6 and Level 7 projects give you the chance to work independently and contribute considerably to your final mark.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

We're short of engineers in a lot of areas and mechanical engineering is no exception. Mechanical engineers are in demand across multiple industries, with vehicle manufacturing most popular, with roles especially common in design and manufacturing. Other important sectors include aerospace, the oil and gas industry, consultancy and defence. Jobs are all around the country, with London, the Midlands, Scotland and the South East the most likely places for a new mechanical engineer to find work at the moment, and starting salaries are good. Although large employers are much the most likely place to get work, some of the most challenging, cutting edge jobs are with small niche engineering firms, so keep your eyes peeled if you want something a little different. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
