Do you want to make a difference to the lives of children and their families? Working with Children, Young People and Families addresses the increasing demands faced by contemporary families, such as the effects of social media, poverty and changing family structures.

You'll study aspects of child development, looking at how society understands the concept of family and the rights of children. You'll also look at the complex issue of safeguarding children, considering as a practitioner the current law and policy initiatives to understand how we can protect children.

We'll explore the range of problems that families can face while children are growing up, examining not only the approaches needed to support and empower families, but also the range of skills and therapeutic interventions needed for families.

You'll get the opportunity to explore your career options early in your degree when you complete two professional work placements in your first and second years. Working in a variety of child and family settings, you'll make the link between theory and practice and understand the importance of professionalism in the workplace. We'll also work with you to develop your research skills, showing you how to use research for professional settings and policy making.

By the time you graduate, you'll have developed the key professional skills needed for assessing and intervening in children's lives and an understanding of the complexities of multi-agency working.

**Placement opportunities**
?We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You'll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months' professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out.

You'll complete a five-week professional work placement in your first year and a six-week professional work placement in your second year. Our students have worked as family support workers, pastoral support workers and in secondary schools while on placements. They've also worked in children's centres, youth services, police domestic violence units and youth offending teams.

**Graduate opportunities**
You'll be prepared for a career in family support or children's centre work, or you could progress onto postgraduate study that could lead to a career in social work.

The emphasis is on helping you to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need to work directly with children and families, to establish good relationships with other professionals or to focus on developing higher level professional and academic skills in your future career.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Just over 1,600 students graduated in social policy in 2015, which makes it one of the smaller social studies subjects. This is a popular subject at Masters level — 750 Masters in social policy were awarded last year - and so a lot of the more sought-after jobs in management and research tend to go to social policy graduates with postgraduate degrees. For those who leave university after their first degree, then jobs in social care (especially community and youth work) and education, the police, marketing and human resources and recruitment are popular — along with local government, although there are fewer of those jobs around than in the past. This degree is a bit less reliant on London for jobs than other similar subjects, so if you'd like to work outside the capital, it might be worth considering - although the jobs still tend to be in big cities.
