Your degree will give you an in-depth understanding of human psychology; how consumers make purchasing decisions; and how you can influence business relationships through Marketing strategies. Your course covers a range of modules in both subjects, enabling you to understand how consumers think, feel and make decisions.

Year 1: Introduction to design; marketing learning community (1st year); part 1 marketing; understanding psychology. Year 2: Marketing research; consumer behaviour; marketing in the supply chain; cognitive psychology; social psychology; personality and individual differences; marketing learning community (2nd year); advertising. Year 3: Industrial placement. Year 4: Advanced topics in consumer behaviour; marketing learning community (final year); strategic marketing; brand strategy; advanced cognitive psychology; developmental psychology; advanced social psychology.

The marketing industry hasn't been as badly affected by the recession as many others, and so lots of graduates from all kinds of subjects go into it - with marketing graduates doing so more often than others. A lot of the jobs are in London, but graduates don't just go to work in advertising agencies. All sorts of industries do their own marketing these days, and with the rise of digital and mobile technology, a lot of marketing is done in quite innovative ways, using a wide range of methods. A lot of jobs in this industry are handled through recruitment agencies, so if you get in touch with them early, that might give you a headstart for some of the jobs available. But be careful – unpaid working is not the norm in the marketing industry, but it is more common than in most sectors.

One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the fourth most popular subject overall, one in 24 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates – far more than there are jobs in psychology – this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business. With a mix of good people skills and with excellent number and data handling skills, a psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes – but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
