Course description

This is a mainstream Biological Sciences degree with a bias towards human and disease-related topics. This degree is aimed at students with a broad interest in the biological sciences who have a specific interest in the biological mechanisms underlying the maintenance of human health or disease conditions and who wish to gain additional work experience as part of their degree. The degree is designed to provide a broad grounding in bioscience subjects whilst maintaining an emphasis on specific biomedical topics. You’ll also receive in-depth training in the key techniques associated with modern biological and biomedical practices by taking a series of techniques courses, some of which are taught by staff from a local hospital. This programme provides you with support to secure a paid placement enabling you to experience twelve months working in the type of organisation that you might aspire to join when you graduate. The placement offers you the opportunity to work as a full time employee of the organisation with the same training and opportunities as other employees whilst still receiving both academic and pastoral support from the University. In your first two years, you’ll study core Biomedical Science subjects such as Genetics, Anatomy and Tissue Structure, Infection and Immunity, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology and Biomedicine and Society. You’ll also choose from other bioscience modules, such as Evolutionary Biology and Aquatic Ecology. In addition, you will take a Placement Preparation module. In your second year you’ll also take techniques courses such as Cell Biology Techniques, DNA Technology and Microbiological Techniques. You will also take part in a ‘work-based learning’ module designed to provide guidance and support as you apply for nationally advertised placements and help you gain the most from your placement year. You will spend your third year on an industrial placement, which may be science or non-science. In your fourth and final year, you can tailor your degree to your own interests by selecting from a diverse range of subjects including Medical Genetics, Cell Signalling, Environmental Pathogens, Protein Biochemistry, Tropical Diseases, and Immunology. During your degree, you’ll conduct your own laboratory-based project where you’ll benefit from the research experience of our internationally renowned academic staff.

The recession was tough on biology graduates, and although the jobs market has improved for them - a lot - it's still not back to where it was a few years ago. If you want a career in biology research — and a lot of biology students do - you'll need to take a doctorate, so give some thought as to where you might do it and how you might fund it (the government still funds doctorates for good students). A lot of graduates also take 1 year Masters courses to specialise in this wide and deep subject - most students take a standard biology course for their first degree and then specialise in subjects like ecology, conservation or marine biology later. Hospitals, universities, biotech firms, zoos and nature reserves and clinical and scientific testing are common industries of employment for biology graduates.

These statistics refer to the prospects of graduates from a range of degrees including environmental health, counselling and occupational therapy, but the numbers of students taking these subjects tend to be quite small. Occupational therapy is an exception, with 1,060 degrees awarded in 2015. There are also usually a larger number of mature students, particularly with counselling-related degrees. We don't have enough occupational therapists to meet demand in the UK and numbers training are falling, so if you're looking at a role in the health sector this is a good option to consider.
