The Marketing and Psychology combined honours degree at Keele provides you with an excellent understanding of why humans feel, think and act the way they do and the impact that marketing and communication can have on human behaviours. You will learn about marketing and business in the context of social and cultural trends and will be encouraged to apply your learning to strategic decision making. In your Marketing modules, youll start with core modules that introduce you to the basic foundations of knowledge about markets and consumers, patterns of consumer behaviour and how to understand and communicate with them. You will also learn about the wider context in which business operates; its social, legal and political dimensions. As the course progresses, you will also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge by exploring branding and digital marketing, which have very rapidly evolving skill requirements.In Psychology modules, you will find out what the latest research tells us about human behaviour in a biological and cognitive framework. In our well-equipped laboratories, you will learn how to design and conduct your own psychological studies using a range of quantitative and qualitative techniques. The emphasis is on understanding how psychology impacts on everyday life; from developing a sense of self and negotiating personal relationships to influencing judgements about matters of global significance.The Psychology part of this course is accredited by which is a first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and a requirement for further study and training for a career in Psychology should you choose to take this path. Your subject specific and transferable skill set will open up a diverse variety of career options for you to take into business, the public sector or the not for profit sector. Many organisations recruit both marketing and psychology graduates not just commerce and industry but also the health services, local and central government, political parties, charities, educational institutions and more. Want to join a fast-moving, diverse industry that's at the cutting edge of tech? Try marketing! A lot of the jobs are in London, but graduates don't just go to work in advertising agencies — all sorts of industries do their own marketing these days, and with the rise of digital and mobile technology, a lot of marketing is done in quite innovative ways using a wide range of methods. Common industries (apart from advertising and PR) include recruitment, online retail, higher education, banking and IT. A lot of jobs in this industry are handled through recruitment agencies, so if you get in touch with them early, that might give you a headstart for some of the jobs available. But be careful — unpaid working is not the norm in the marketing industry, but it is more common than in most sectors.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.
