At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Human Geography and Mathematics.

This highly interdisciplinary course provides you with a strong theoretical and practical background in Human Geography giving you the understanding and
skills to explore an array of world issues from different perspectives. Our course offers zero-cost options for overseas field courses, exceptional staff support for students, and is ranked Top 10 in The Guardian University Guide 2018.

This course will take you to fascinating fieldwork destinations in the UK and overseas, where you’ll add to your growing skills in understanding and influencing the way humans relate to the environment. In the lab, the field and the archive, you’ll explore the characteristics, diversity, interdependence and changing nature of places. You’ll understand the applications and possibilities Human Geography provides in solving problems, creating wealth and improving quality of life. You’ll collect and analyse spatial, social and environmental data, and become familiar with industry standard GIS software for analysing, visualising and integrating that data.
Human Geography at Keele was ranked in the top 10 nationally for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2016.

Our Mathematics programmes are designed for students with varying education backgrounds and you need not have taken Further Mathematics at A Level. To make your transition from A Level to University Mathematics as smooth as possible we have:
• a very carefully designed first year curriculum;
• a multi-layered student support structure;
• rapid feedback on coursework;
• considerable experience in teaching, examining and moderating A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and in school/college liaison.

You will learn to use maths to develop precise and logical arguments, construct rigorous proofs, and formulate solutions to new problems. Over the years we have prided ourselves on providing a friendly and supportive environment for students. In particular, by the end of your degree, you should feel that you know the staff well and that they know you.

In addition to providing very specific human geography skills, this course will enhance your abilities in communication, make you proficient in various methods such as GIS or primary data collection, and develop your creativity in problem solving. This will all be invaluable as you address social, environmental, ethical
and global problems as part of your studies or in the world of work. You might go on to work as a planning and development surveyor, logistics manager, residential surveyor, town planner, international development worker, transport planner or market researcher.

Mathematics helps you to take novel approaches to problem solving and make critical interpretations of data and text; your skills will be in demand wherever there’s a need for logical thinking. An extremely wide range of career paths is open to mathematicians, where high levels of mathematical ability are desirable. This can include fields of work as diverse as finance, data analytics, teaching, engineering, medical statistics and management consultancy.

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
