At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Film Studies and Music Technology.

Film Studies and Music Technology is an exciting opportunity to combine the technical and theoretical understanding of sound with the study of film as an audio-visual medium. You will gain analytical and practical skills in both areas, offering you the chance to pursue both critical and creative work in the course and beyond.

You will look at the history of film across various cultural, political and aesthetic contexts, thinking creatively about the evolving form and significance of this audio-visual medium, and the expressive options available to filmmakers around the world. You will also have the option to produce your own creative work in practical filmmaking modules. At the same time, you will undertake innovative, cutting-edge study and practice in the application of technology to composition, music production, sound design, screen music, audio-visuals and music software.

This degree offers a set of key and transferable skills, both technical and research-oriented, that lend themselves to a variety of employment options in the creative industries and beyond. Career paths open to graduates in this programme include work in film, television and radio, recording, production, sound design, soundtrack creation, software design, song writing and performance, as well as original audio and audiovisual composition, studio work, and teaching at all levels of education. You’ll develop a wide range of skills in presentation, writing, project management and critical thinking that can be transferred to many other professions: our graduates also work, for instance, as solicitors, journalists, civil servants and in business. You may also choose to pursue postgraduate study at Master's or doctoral level.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The UK has a world-class media industry in film, print and broadcast media, worth billions to the economy, and employing thousands of new graduates every year, so it's hardly surprising that ambitious and talented graduates want to work in it. But be realistic — this is a highly-sought after industry and jobs are amongst the most competitive around. If you want to be a star in front of the camera or in print, you might want to look at other options. Media studies graduates are much the most likely graduates to get into the media industry (in 2015, one in five grads entering the film industry, and one in four getting jobs in TV or film production had a media studies degree) and they’re more likely to be in crucial roles directing, producing, or operating sound or video equipment, or in media research or marketing roles. Self-employment and freelancing is more common than for most degrees, so that may be something to prepare for.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Music is a popular degree subject and a little over 4,600 degrees were awarded to UK graduates in 2015. Most were working after six months — but postgraduate study (usually continuing with music) is quite common and a lot of graduates go into music teaching, often as freelance or travelling music teachers of particular instruments. Obviously, many music graduates get work as musicians as well, or work as sound recordists and in similar technical roles. Music is important in advertising and so a lot of graduates go into this industry, and management is also a popular job role for music graduates. There's also a niche for music graduates wanting to work in IT and computing, particularly with web applications. Because a lot of musician work is temporary or freelance, the most common way for new graduates to get jobs as musicians is through their own contacts, so learning how to make good use of networks and contacts might help in your career.
