At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Computer Science and Geology.

The Computer Science course offers a first-rate environment with dedicated computing labs open 24/7 and cutting edge equipment in our MakerSpace. You’ll study research informed modules that relate to work being carried out within the School.

Our excellent central location is ideal for industrial placements, with over 40 companies situated on the Keele Science Park alone.
In a mixture of interactive lectures and computer lab based sessions, you’ll learn to use technology to create new opportunities and to solve a wide range of problems, benefiting every aspect of society from the home to business, government and beyond. Our teaching is informed by our cuttingedge research, and also reflects what’s happening now in industry. This includes areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer games development, human-computer interaction, software engineering, web development, mobile application development, evolutionary systems and cybersecurity. Combined Honours students can follow a set of modules providing a specialism in information systems, smart systems, or creative computing.

Geology examines global change over the whole lifespan of our planet. It is an applied course that studies the Earth’s processes and materials, and the economic and sustainable methods of discovering and utilising its resources. There is a strong emphasis on developing fieldwork, laboratory and applied research skills.

The Geology course at Keele examines the Earth, its structure, formation, composition, history, processes, resources, hazards and materials. It looks at rocks, minerals and fossils, how they were formed, how they can be exploited as a resource, and what they can tell us about the history of the Earth. It also covers geological processes such as earthquakes, volcanoes and plate tectonics. Geology is a practical subject with applied problem-solving laboratory classes and field courses where you will learn how to interpret and map geological features, and explore for future geological resources. This course focuses particularly on applied research skills: you will learn to collect, analyse and interpret different types of geological data, and to carry out your own research using specialist software and equipment. Furthermore, you will complete a comprehensive and integrated UK and overseas fieldwork programme with no cost options.

Our Computer Science degrees build the essential skills which are in demand from employers looking for systems analysts, programmers, web/app developers, interface designers, data scientists, software engineers and consultants. You’ll graduate with a wide range of computing and employability skills plus a highly developed approach to problem solving.

Modern industrial society depends on geologists to find natural resources such as minerals, hydrocarbons, metals, aggregates and water, for designing foundations, tunnels and other engineering projects, and environmental projects such as radioactive waste disposal or carbon dioxide sequestration. You will acquire a wide range of transferable skills, including communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills, and the ability to research, evaluate and synthesise information from diverse sources.

The market for geologists is has been quite linked to the oil industry for some time now, and the drop in the price of oil has meant the industry has stopped recruiting as many people for the time being. Geologists are still in demand, though, so the main effect has been to reduce the opportunities - and salaries - for geologists working abroad. At home, the oil industry remains a big employer, and so are the mining, civil engineering, construction and consultancy industries, with geology graduates working as geologists, geophysicists, civil engineers and environmental professionals.
