At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Chemistry and Geology.

The Chemistry course at Keele consistently attracts excellent student feedback and provides an innovative curriculum and high quality teaching. The variety of coursework items embedded within the course allow for the development of chemistry and transferable skills, giving our graduates excellent prospects.

You’ll develop a solid foundation of chemical theory and practical skills, building to cover advanced concepts and contemporary issues in chemistry in later years. You can tailor your studies to reflect your interests, and learn how to pursue your own research. You’ll have hands-on experience with state-of-the-art scientific instruments and techniques, enjoy access to dedicated IT facilities and an excellent modern teaching laboratory. You’ll learn to use chemistry in problem solving, and to present your theories and findings confidently and imaginatively to your audiences through a range of media. You could even spend a semester or year abroad.

Geology examines global change over the whole lifespan of our planet. It is an applied course that studies the Earth’s processes and materials, and the economic and sustainable methods of discovering and utilising its resources. There is a strong emphasis on developing fieldwork, laboratory and applied research skills.

Geology at Keele scored 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey in 2016. The Geology course at Keele examines the Earth, its structure, formation, composition, history, processes, resources, hazards and materials. It looks at rocks, minerals and fossils, how they were formed, how they can be exploited as a resource, and what they can tell us about the history of the Earth. It also covers geological processes such as earthquakes, volcanoes and plate tectonics. Geology is a practical subject with applied problem-solving laboratory classes and field courses where you will learn how to interpret and map geological features, and explore for future geological resources. This course focuses particularly on applied research skills: you will learn to collect, analyse and interpret different types of geological data, and to carry out your own research using specialist software and equipment. Furthermore, you will complete a comprehensive and integrated UK and overseas fieldwork programme with no cost options.

The many opportunities offered by the Chemistry course will equip you to confidently and skillfully pursue your chosen career. You might work in the chemical industry, research or education; you could choose to become a research scientist, toxicologist, or analytical chemist; or you could choose an allied career such as patent law or scientific writing.

Modern industrial society depends on geologists to find natural resources such as minerals, hydrocarbons, metals, aggregates and water, for designing foundations, tunnels and other engineering projects, and environmental projects such as radioactive waste disposal or carbon dioxide sequestration. You will acquire a wide range of transferable skills, including communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills, and the ability to research, evaluate and synthesise information from diverse sources.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The market for geologists is has been quite linked to the oil industry for some time now, and the drop in the price of oil has meant the industry has stopped recruiting as many people for the time being. Geologists are still in demand, though, so the main effect has been to reduce the opportunities - and salaries - for geologists working abroad. At home, the oil industry remains a big employer, and so are the mining, civil engineering, construction and consultancy industries, with geology graduates working as geologists, geophysicists, civil engineers and environmental professionals.

Chemistry graduates are in demand from a wide range of industries, from the food, oil, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to consultancy, technical analysis and teaching. They're also prized by business and finance employers for their research and data handling skills — anywhere there is research and data to be explained, you can find chemistry grads. If you want a career in research, you need a doctorate, so start planning now if you fancy one of these exciting and challenging jobs - but good students can usually get grants to take a doctorate, so don't worry about the financing if you think you have what it takes.
