At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Biology and Education.If you are fascinated by the way organisms work and what makes them tick, and have a passion for teaching, then this course is for you. Biology andEducation is an ideal combined degree for people interested in the amazing world of organisms. The course will introduce you to major perspectives from whicheducation may be studied and you will explore their links to biology. You will explore present and future developments in education and professional practice, against the wider background of social, cultural and economic change. You will take a broad approach to biology and examine biodiversity and its evolution from the geological past. You will also explore the behaviour and physiology of whole organisms. In your final year you will carry out a research project under the expert guidance of an academic staff member. Youll benefit from a supportive environment as well as fantastic laboratory facilities and equipment.When you graduate, you might choose to do a PGCE and become a teacher. You will possess highly developed subject-specific and critical thinking skills that are prized for careers in schools. The course also opens up a range of opportunities outside schools as you will acquire a range of transferable employability skills of relevance to laboratory and industry careers. Keeles Language Centre also offers a variety of language courses that may enable you to graduate with an enhanced degree with foreign language competency or an internationally recognised qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).Biology graduates combined with Education have also pursued diverse careers including scientific writing, industry, genetics research, medical statistics, management and sales. Several graduates have gone into Medicine. This combination has also provided excellent preparation for postgraduate study.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The recession was tough on biology graduates, and although the jobs market has improved for them - a lot - it's still not back to where it was a few years ago. If you want a career in biology research — and a lot of biology students do - you'll need to take a doctorate, so give some thought as to where you might do it and how you might fund it (the government still funds doctorates for good students). A lot of graduates also take 1 year Masters courses to specialise in this wide and deep subject - most students take a standard biology course for their first degree and then specialise in subjects like ecology, conservation or marine biology later. Hospitals, universities, biotech firms, zoos and nature reserves and clinical and scientific testing are common industries of employment for biology graduates.

When you look at employment stats, bear in mind that a lot of students are already working in education when they take this type of course and are studying to help their career development. This means they already have jobs when they start their course, and a lot of graduates continue to study, whilst working, when they complete their courses. If your course is focused on nursery or early years education, a lot of these graduates go into nursery work or classroom or education assistant jobs; these jobs are not currently classed as 'graduate level' in the stats (although they may well be in the future as classifications catch up with changes in the way we work), and many graduates who enter these roles say that a degree was necessary.
