At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Biochemistry and Biology.

Biochemistry and Biology is the perfect combination to study the complexity and diversity of life from the molecular level, up to the level of the whole organism. We offer a contemporary laboratory and field-based programme, with opportunities to study or work at partner institutions in Europe and Malaysia.
We will equip you with the skills to tackle increasingly problematic and complex issues surrounding our ever growing and ageing human population, our medical problems, and the impacts our actions have on each other and on life on Earth. Combining Biochemistry and Biology gives you the chance to approach problems from the molecular and organismal level. The Biochemistry element of the course covers mainly mammalian Biochemistry and has a focus on health and disease. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in field courses and undertake research projects. A four year version of the course provides the
opportunity to take an industrial placement or an international year between your second and third years. This includes the possibility of completing a placement at one of a number of research institutes in Europe. For example, our students have done placements at the prestigious Pasteur Institute in Paris, home to a number of Nobel Prize winners.

A degree in Biochemistry and Biology is the first step towards a broad variety of careers. These can include the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food industries, the NHS and environmental health sector and research within the biological, environmental and medical sectors. The applied nature of the course will equip you with a range of transferable employability skills of relevance to careers in the Biosciences as well as in other graduate careers where numeracy and an objective scientific approach to problem solving are valued.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

Around 2,500 graduates got degrees in this demanding but valuable subject last year. Graduates who want a career in research usually take postgraduate qualifications - over a third of graduates in the subject took this option - but those who want to start work when they graduate have a lot to choose from. Laboratory work and other jobs in the biosciences are popular, as well as in education, but many biochemistry graduates find their way into the finance industry and as a consequence, graduates from these disciplines are particularly likely to get jobs in London and the South East.

What do graduate employment figures really tell you?

The recession was tough on biology graduates, and although the jobs market has improved for them - a lot - it's still not back to where it was a few years ago. If you want a career in biology research — and a lot of biology students do - you'll need to take a doctorate, so give some thought as to where you might do it and how you might fund it (the government still funds doctorates for good students). A lot of graduates also take 1 year Masters courses to specialise in this wide and deep subject - most students take a standard biology course for their first degree and then specialise in subjects like ecology, conservation or marine biology later. Hospitals, universities, biotech firms, zoos and nature reserves and clinical and scientific testing are common industries of employment for biology graduates.
